I can pull on the steering wheel in my 74 and get it to come out a couple of inches.

The problem occurs before the clamp that secures the shaft to the steering box. I don't see any bolts to tighten down to hold the shaft in place. The PO did a SOA conversion on this Jeep. Is this just a by product of the job? Do I need to replace the entire lower shaft or is this correctable without new parts?

    Thanks.

think I'd put a spacer between the firewall and the first joint to take up the slop and call it good

You know, looking at the drawing in my handy dealer manual it looks like I may be missing the bushing assembly right above the U-joint. Does it appear that way in the video? I will scan the drawing tomorrow. It looks like 4wd.com has one for 6 bucks. Could it be this easy?

    drexotic Happy now?!?!?

Yeah, something is missing in there!

Mine has been modified but I'll take a look and see if I can tell what's not there.

The arrow points to what I think is missing. I'm going to go ahead and pick up the part.

In the picture the spring that is just below the steering wheel is supposed to hold hold the steering shaft up. On my 72 you can push the steering wheel down against the spring and the shaft will move some but it will pop back up. There is a bushing in the base of the steering column and there is supposed to be a thrust washer between the steering column and steering shaft u joint that looks like it is missing. (mine was missing also when I got my Jeep)

There is a large flat washer that is missing but that is not going to cause that much play. As for the bushing, That would depend on side to side play. Usually at least the inner plastic bushing is shot. This bushing is not available. "Mcruff" on this forum made me a new one out of brass that replaced both bushings.

    Is this not it?

I sent a PM to McRuff. I'd rather deal "local" anyway.

That is a sector shaft bushing. A sector shaft is what the pittman arm attatches to. It comes out the bottom of the steering box. This is a pic of the original bushing.

Ordered a bushing from McRuff. Thanks for the help, everyone.
