O.K. so I did a search and came up with zip. I'm going this weekend to pick up a new to me F134. Can two or three guys wrestle it in and out of a truck bed without getting a hernia? How much do they weigh?

Can 2 or 3 guys lift an F-head? Yes.

Should 2-3 guys lift an F-head? Definitely not, unless you really don't have any other choice.

The issue isn't lifting it straight up, it's then moving it sideways into a truck or onto a trailer. It's really easy to have it get away from you and the results can be devastating to the human body.

If it were me I'd try to borrow or rent an engine crane, they're notthat expensive and if you're careful nobody gets hurt.

I helped man-handle a bare block into the back of an XJ one time- I Did Not Enjoy It.

    At All.

I don't think two average guys could even begin to lift a full engine.

Those little F Heads are HEAVY! I had one fall over on to my ankle when I was trying to possition it to lift it with an engine hoist! It bruised me up pretty good, and hurt to walk on for a week. How it didn't break my ankle, I don't know. Luckly I had a couple of guys with me, and they were able to get it off me in short order.

Here's some info that I pulled up from the Novak Conversions web site. Hope it helps.

    "Suspension & Engine Weight
You'll be replacing one of three factory engines. Their nominal estimated, accessory loaded weights are:

    •Willys 134 CID I4, 470 lbs.

Engines you may replace these with may include:

    •Chevy 4.3L V6, 425 lbs.
    •Chevy Small Block V8 (Gen. I & II), 550 lbs.
    •GM Gen. III+ V8 (iron blocks), 470 lbs.
    •GM Gen. III+ V8 (aluminum blocks), 407 lbs.
    •Buick 90 degree V6, 375 lbs.

Factory springs are usually great for most Small Block V6 and V8 engines. We have replaced four-cylinder Jeep engines with V8's and noticed no sag or overly soft ride in the front axle. Aftermarket springs usually make no distinction and are rated well for most engines this side of Big Blocks." -Novak Conversions

Those weights listed make me want to do an engine swap!

A lot... My dad bro and I took my F4 out of his truck with an engine hoist... My bare L head though 3 guys picked up at the shop and carried in. When moving it into the truck I picked it up on my own to move it to the front of the bed-didnt' want to slide it.

Well over 400lbs I know that. IIRC when I took mine to the scrap yard it weighed in at like 550 with everything minus head and chalk full of water according to the scale. Not going to complain if they gave me a little extra though.

    Mil manual states:
    499.65# "with flywheel and accessories"
    365.15# "with flywheel, less accessories".

My interpretation is: F134 + T90 + D18 = 500# ... this would have been the weight Mil mechanics were needing to plan for when yanking the full monte, as I believe was intended, based on the fold-down grill etc.

I just weighed my spare complete D18 @ 80# (dry).

    Novak says a T90 weighs 75#.

I'll try to confirm the F and T90 sometime this week.

Agreed. F134 is right about 470# per my neighbor's balance scale ... all engine accy's + bell, clutch, p plate, oil, (no water), 6' of chain-for-hoist included. Stripped of everything but head, I would expect to shed 50-100#
