Cannot get my 74 CJ5 to pull the front wheels in 4 wheel low. Seems to be in the transfere case. With the front wheels locked and the vehicle moving the front drive shaft turns, but will not pull. Any ideas?

If the drive shaft is turning in gear it'll be in the diff not the t case.
Make sure the hubs are OK 1st then if that all checks OK pull the cover and look at the spider gears.

I'd check to make sure you shifted it all the way into gear. The D20 has the elusive 2wd low position sometimes. Make sure hte shifter is pulles ALL the way back like you're trying to push it through the floor.

the front driveshaft will turn as soon as the front hubs are locked, regardless of transfer case shift position.
I would unlock the hubs, and then try shifting thru all the ranges; when any 4wd position is shifted into, the front shaft should turn. If not, then linkage problem as mentioned above or internal problem; bent fork or shaft, etc.
Was it ever working for you, or is this new problem ? any unusual noises ?
    a little more info please.

When I bought the vehicle the front axle was stripped . I completly rebuilt the hubs and put a tracklock in place of the differential. Since discovering the problem I have inspected the tracklock and ring gears and have found no problems. I even contacted the engineer at tracklock and we both have determined that it is working correctely.
I have put it in gear with the hubs unlocked and the driveshaft turns, but with the hubs locked I think it jumps out of gear.

I am going to remove the rear shaft to make sure it is out of the picture( as far as pulling) and try to see it the shifter is just not goinig into gear or if a shift fork is bent.

    What do ya think?

Remember, even with the track-lock, if just one hub is not engaged properly, the front axle will not pull.

Simple method. Lock in both hubs, t case in 2 high. Jack up one wheel and attempt to turn it. If you can turn the tire, see if the axle u joints rotate. If the near one doesn't or if the far one does, then you have a locking hub problem on that side. If you can't turn it, place the t case in 4 high and unlock the far hub (remember you have a LS, so you might not be able to overcome the friction plates. If it were an open axle, you would simply observe the driveline without unlocking the hub ). attempt to rotate the tire again. If the driveline spins then you have a t case problem.

Found the problem. The shifter was not staying in four wheel low, which is all the way back. I fixed the problem by installing a twin stick conversion kit. It works great and only cost $99 on ebay from JB Custom Fab.

I'm gonna jump onto Clay's thread here. I hope you're OK with that... I'm glad you got your issue fixed....

My hubs are not locking since I replaced my narrow '81 D30 with wide track '85 D30. I would think that the hubs would be the same but for some reason when I raise the fornt end, the driver's side axle shaft does not turn when I spin the tire but when I spin the tire on the pass. side the axle shafts on both sides turn. There is an ARB in the diff but I haven't hooked up the air lines yet. I did this with both wheels off the ground, hubs locked and the t-case in neutral.

When I put the new / replacement axle in I used the hubs from the '81 with the "Mile Marker" locks. Every thing bolted together just fine.

Do you guys think it's the hubs or could it be in the diff? Or do the two axles call for different hubs?
