I have not seen any pictures or references to what a customer got when he ordered a radio with his new 1966 CJ5. I hear they were made by Motorola. Does anyone have an original radio installed in their jeep? Was it under dash or in-dash?

Radios were not AFAIK a factory option in '66, they certainly don't show up in any of the parts manuals up to at least '71. I'm certain that the dealers did offer radios such as the motorola units but mounting location would be up to owner or dealer mechanic.

Even up into the late 70's just about every option was available as a dealer add-on, although more and more of them became factory-available. I would think that just about any radio available from te early 60's on up would be a solid-state (no tubes!) unit but that is just an educated guess.

The only really installed radio was available for the '75 model. Later models through the dash.
The '75 radio was mounted in what looks like a fiberglass/plastic case mounted to the underside of the dash to the right of the instrument cluster.
You can see a picture of this if you can obtain a '75 sales brochure, also I believe shown in the parts book.
Prior to this, the radio was placed anywhere it fit.

Not to beat a dead thread to death but while I was perusing a '72 parts manual I found the first reference to a factory radio kit-

    15.030 ANTENNA, Radio
    975 238

    15.320-1 RADIO KIT (AM)
    83/86 (Under Dash-With Self Contained Speaker) 05 978238 (CJ5/6)
    87 (Push button) 981 030 (Commando)

    15.320-2 KNOB, Station Selector
    973 288

    15.320-3 KNOB, Tone Control
    973462

These items were not listed in the '71 manual.

    Now You Know.

    Thanks Howard
I just scored a free Motorola "solid state" under dash radio with self contained speaker that will be period-correct for my '66. It was in a neighbors garage and I didnt charge him to remove it.
Got it working last night so this spring hopefully I can have some AM toons.

    Thats great.:)

Your're lucky you have AM stations left to listen to, all the ones here have either shut down completely or moved to FM.
