when trailering your Jeep........

    do you leave your manual trans in gear or neutral ?
    even though the Jeep is secured, it can still rock around a little
    just curious

    I take mine out of gear.
    With 4 straps its not going far.

    I have read that it is not good to leave in gear. Even if secured there would be enough movement to be pounding the ring & pinion during the trip.

    Hmm - I always left the flattie in gear. Actually in low range and 1st gear. I never thought about the ring and pinion, but that makes sense.

    I have heard its ok to do with a stick but never an auto tranny.
    I've just always popped it out of gear after its tied doen.

    I have trailered a race car many many miles with the auto tranny in gear and I will do the same with the jeep . I havent noticed any r&p failure b/c of this ... now watch the rear end fall out the next time I trailer something LOL

    If it beats the R&P any harder than normal driving then you have serious trailer pulling issues!

    I remember in the late 70s early 80s we had some new FSJs delivered at the dealership; some of them developed bad wheel bearings; called them railroad bearings from rocking on the train out west from Toledo; could see the roller marks in the race

    Interesting topic. I always left my jeeps in first gear when transporting them on a trailer. I do use 2 chains and binders. And they don’t move at all.

    Then while driving and I think about the jeep, I comfort myself by saying 4 things will have to come undone for the jeep to fall off the trailer.
    Each of the 2 chains have to come loose, the emergency brake has to release and then it would have to jump out of gear.

    Speaking of trailing, I also double check the pin that goes into your receiver hitch. I like to take a couple of wraps of black electrical tape around the safety pin that holds the bigger pin in place. Just in case it were to get snagged on a bush or something and pull it self out. Then I use the safety chains to hook to my pickup.

    Never lost a jeep yet. I don't even want to think about it.

    Last year my twin brother saw the results of small trailer that came loose on a two lane highway and hit a car head on. An infant was instantly killed when the trailer cut the car in half that it hit. There was one thing positive that came out of that accident, it has caused me to re think about all the bad stuff that could wrong when pulling a trailer. Hope you will do the same.

    I've always left cars that I'm hauling in gear, stick or automatic, and the parking brake on. Never had any R&P problems. Just seems like a little insurance if a strap or chain comes loose.

    FWIW - I asked the carrier that brought SSDutch what he does. He said he's required to leave cars in gear.

    put the jeep in gear. (rev or 1st depends on how I drove it on.) then tie the rear w/transport grade chain (3/8), the front I use nylon racthet straps. I then cross the chains/straps opposite sides. (ie driver jeep to pass trailer and vice verse) jeep does not move while on trailer. learned that way from grandpa (hauled steel coils for 40+ years).
