EFI on 69 Commando

This post has been three years in the making. Sorry it took so long. I finally can say I got MegaSquirt working on my commando. I have a 69 convertible Commando with a 225 Dauntless V6. I purchased the ECU three years ago and since then I have moved got married and traded commandos. Initially I had a 71 and eventually I traded for the convertible. This one had a fresh rebuild on the motor.
Before I get into it I have some people to thank. One is “green71jeep” without his help I would still be struggling through it. Also Matt at DIYAutoTune, he always bailed me out when I was at my end. THANKS!
I absolutely love the fuel injection. I still have some tuning to do, but this is the greatest! With the two barrel Rochester carburetor I had to make a choice, I could have it idle or drive but I could not have both. I also seemed to leave a nasty black streak in the driveway. I guess you could say I was running a little rich. Now I idle at 850 rpm and I don’t recall it ever driving better. I love to hear the odd fire motor lopping along at the stoplights. I would be interested in feedback and thoughts.
I have a web page in the works and will post it when it is available. I loaded few pictures to a public album under my user, feel free. Those of you anxiously holding your breath please exhale…R)R)R)

Congrats on the build. I run a MS on my 72 CJ. It does run really good.

    Hello,
Everytime I see a post on EFI for the odd fire, the posts never outline the parts or how to set it up. Could some one help us fellow members with a how to write up on parts used and how to set it up. I used the search feature but do not see a how to article out there. I would really like to see how you did it and I think alot of others would too. Thanks in advance if you care to outline the procedure.

Funny, you should ask. I have a bunch of pictures, and the start of an outline for a web site. Myself and “green71jeep” have talked about trying to get a group together to help others if they choose to go down this road. Please allow me some time to gather everything I have into one sock. It was always my intention to get a write up for this. What would you like to see? I can quickly get a parts list and some installation diagrams. I will try and get these out but please provide feedback and thoughts. http://electricbrook.net/Mega_Squirt_EFI.htm I still have some information gathering, but it's a start.

Larry - nice start. I would focus on what you took for granted - the wireing. Being good at that can really help those who are intimidated by those things. Also a section on putting the ECU together (I am assuming you bought a U build it kit). A full list of the parts you bought from DIY (the place I was looking at as well) and why.

I will expand on both sections, wiring and the ECU portions. I didn't want to boog people down with the details but after a couple reads I realized I need a bit more. Thanks for the input. By the way I am running that distributor I got from you in this commando with Pertronix, it works great!

Glad it worked out for you. I was going to go the MS way, but came into a little money so am going to go with the Powerjection III setup this winter. That and do a rig for my middle boy to wheel this spring before he goes to Afghanistan next fall.

I plan on doing a write up on the Powerjection and what I mentioned was what I was looking for when I looked into the MS.

    Just an FYI

Please forgive the stupid question, but do you have to assemble the computer in one of these MS "kits" (I am picturing a soldering iron and some microchips)?

I think I could handle the junkyard runs and wiring, but the assembly of a computer honestly kind of weirds me out a touch (I have studied biology and not electrical engineering).

I have been struggling trying to get an analog 1d holley projection kit to work on my even fire :v6: with a home made adapter and I am ready to try something else (i.e. a 2 barrel TBI).

    LowslowTJ...

You can buy an already assembled or as a kit ,if you are interested in trying MS save yourself some money and build the computer from the kit the directions in the megamanual are flawless just follow the step by step and you will be good to go.

Honestly the kits are easy to build as long as you can follow directions and the great thing about building it is that it gives you an even better understanding how everything works so if something happens you can diagnose problems allot easier.

Thanks for this post and your begining on the website.
I have been researching this for about a year now, as I have 3 engines I need to convert over to FI. (2 Dauntless V6, and 1) AMC 304 V8)

I will check back to look for updates, but you already have helped me, I did not know you needed to us a surge tank.

Thanks again for the info. :driving::stout:

I am glad it helps! I need to get off my duff and update the web site. I have been doing some tuning as of late but ... If I could only get them to pay me without actually going to work. If you have any questions I would be more than glad to help.

Hi larrylunk! I'm a new member here, and I'm also looking for EFI on my 69 Commando :v6:.

Has anyone tried using the Summit Pro-Jection kit? I've been looking at a
Offenhauser 6035DP Intake Manifold to give me a standard carb mount, and a
Holley 502-20S Fuel injector kit. I'm not sure if these two things are all I need, or if there are a ton of gotchas. Is the Mega Squirt the indisputable way to go?

A friend of mine also recommended I use a self-tuning Fast EZ-EFI kit. Has anyone used one of these?

Congratulations on the MS EFI Larry. I think the tuning with megasquirt is never quite done. My jeep has been injected going on 3 years and I'm not done tuning yet. Getting a group of us together to help everyone out is a great idea. Soldering the computer together is great experience as greenjeep71 says it does help in diagnosis if there are problems.

    Hi Terrorent
I have seen many of the kits you have talked about, but never installed them. I guess this all depends on what you are looking for. I choose Megasquirt because I liked the DIY aspect of it. Megasquirt is definitely NOT a weekend project. I have read about the Fast EZ – EFI, it sounds exactly as they say Fast and Easy. I would not say Megasquirt is the “undisputable way to go”. I am happy with it and I am still tuning and learning. With Megasquirt you have the most tuning options available to you. It’s crazy, I think I could Turbo/Super charge my 225 up to 44 lbs of boost and set it up for flex fuel.R)R)R) It is completely wide open what you can do … you just have to figure it out.

Also… Hi Ryan, I agree with everything you have said. Take it easy.

Larry. I tried to find your web site @ http://electricbrook.net/Mega_Squirt_EFI.htm

but it seems to wind up in another place.

I have collected about 3/4's the parts and am looking for more information for my 69 225 oddfire.
