Spare front axle shaft

If you was going to bring a spare front axle shaft would it be the long or short side?

Also how does every one carry their high lift jack? I'm tired of mine trying to come up front and sit with me.

 

A front axle shaft is something I never thought to bring with me as a spare. I have a spare set in the shop, but I don't think we have ever broken one in the 55 years my family has owned this Jeep. Besides, if you did break one on a trip couldn't you just pull it out and drive around in 2WD until you got home? I have the same question about the high-lift jack though.

 

I made brackets on my front bumper to hold my hilift jack. It fits across the front bumper,lower that headlites and almost completely below turn signals. I will attempt to post pics.

 

I've never broken a Jeep front axleshaft either, but I used to break them regularly on my Ford truck plowing snow. It was always the short side (left side on Ford). Pics of my tire carrier & hi-lift jack mount are here-

I put mine up front heres a couple of pic's of it

 

if i had to carry one then it would be the long one. its going to be the one you break first, at least for me that was the case. i twisted the teeth off the long front one and also broke the long back one, twisted the short back one, have a lockright in the back and powerlock in the front. but the longer the shaft the more it can twist, therefore break.

 

I thought the longer it was the more it would twist before it broke, therefore the short one tends to break first?

 

I carry both on a really hard /remote trail or at least leave them in the truck at camp.....but I did make it out of the 'Con one year in 3wd,problem is when the axle breaks it usually will shear off flush in the diff and sometimes that 2"piece can be gotten out with a -magnet on a stiiiiick,(if you are very luck .but ,the twisting/shearing can bind that little guy pretty bad ,,,,,, then you have to drop the steering ,and open the diff ,remove diff and poke out the rest of that shaft , had to do that on a power lock which then needed to be taken totally apart to drive out the broken piece. OR you could be really lucky and bust it at the ujoints , but I never broke them there ,,,,yet.

Still running the same ones that were installed at the factory.

I have a shorter hi-lift 36" I'm going to bolt it to the floor in the back with the base at the tailgate and the top between the seats.

 

like the color of your jeep joe 69cj5 by the way, i mounted my high lift jack behind the rear seat. i came off the inner fender wheels with pipe and used roll bar padding to cover it.

Where did you get that bumper with the spare tire rack? I like the look of and think I want one just like it....

Yes, I would like to take you up on the kind offer of drawings. That bumper looks exactly like the ones Eddie builds, right down to the latch. He has a 60+ page thread on another list of his bumper build, he has been doing them for over 4 years now and quite a number of folks have built their own based on his specs. I wouldn't be surprised if that is where your friend got his plans.
