i been working on my dads jeep for awhile now, I got the carb rebuilt i changed out most of the fuel lines and got my gas tank flushed out and cleaned, changed the oil and i fixed the firing order. i put it all back together and it started up, the first time in 14 years. i need to ajust the carb but i dont know how to. it a 258 straight 6 single barol. well i drove in around the block about 6 time in 4 hours and it started right up every time, well i tried to move it in to the back yard and i turned the lights on then off then i tried starting it and i would not turn over. i tried to jump it and that didnt work. so i dont know what to do
    thanks -Ryan

    How old is the battery?
Get your voltmeter and make sure you have 12+ volts at the battery terminals.

If you don't have a voltmeter, you will not have an easy row to hoe with a resurection of a 74 CJ:D

Check your connections on both sides at the battery and on the motor and starter sounds like you have a bad battery ground that is if you get lights but the starter will not turn over.

Look for corrosion under the insulation of the battery cables. May be a good idea to replace the cables.

when you turn your key do you hear a click or just no power at all to starter?

It is common to run into a bad ground this will cause it to short when you try to start. Jumping across the solenoid is a good idea if does not work you will now no your problem.

1)If jumping works move to battery ground cable to block and post conection.

2)if you still have problems check harness to ignition wires are tight and not coroded or broke.

First of all are we using the proper terminology here. Confusion abounds.
A short is when positive power has incorrectly been connected to the negative or ground.
An open circuit will pass no current or voltage period.
That means that a short will burn wires until it opens, or drain the battery until dead.
The simplest tool for hunting open circuits is the test light.
Since this thread is 4 days old, has the poster found his problem.
