As my signature indicates I just drive 'em. I can do operator's maintenance and minor repairs but beyond that it is Latin to me.

Weather was great Monday (31 May) so I thought I would take the CJ out for a spin. Now I remember why I don't take it out much beside not having a top for it. It runs like C##P! I have had it to 3 "mechanic" in the past 5 years and it still runs like C##P. One sign of a problem is the garage wall next to the exhust pipe is cover in black soot. Second, park it in the garage after a trip, turn it off, close the garage door let sit for 5-20 minutes go back into the garage and it smells of gas.

Anyone know a expert in the Colorado Springs area? I would greatly appricate it.

How often do you drive it? I wouldn't put much stock into it driving like crap if it sits for long periods of time without being driven. Is the gas fresh? If the choke is sticking it might be running rich, hence the black smoke. My advice would be to take it out some nice weekend and drive the snot out of it. Fill it with clean fresh gas and drive it on some longer trips at higher speeds and see if it still runs like crap. My grandpa used to refer to this as "blowing the cobs out of it."

Are you running an electric choke on this carb?

Electric choke? It is a stock 1974 232 CID engine. Did the stock engine come with an electric choke? Had to fill it up before I ran around on Monday. So 7/8 of the gas was "fresh". Drove it about 50 miles. Half on I25 and the other half on city streets. And like I said it didn't even run great right after it was worked on. Took it back to one guy 4 times and still did not get it right.

If you don't have a recommendation of to whom I should take it, don't tell be what I should be doing. I get enough of that from the ex.

You'll find on this board that people are very helpful, many go out of their way to help. Sometimes questions are asked for the sake of clarity........
Think you should rethink your approach

    Uh, yes.

Also, I personally don't know what an "expect" is, so I can't help you there anyway.

    Re: Need An Expect!

I am very sorry for my unexcusable behavior and my bad spelling. I know it is no excuse but I had a reallllllllly bad day yesterday. Please understand that I am frustrated that I can't fix this problem myself (I am lucky that I don't get electrocuted changing a light blub or fall off the step ladder and break my neck) and have not found anyone who can. Please accept my apology and ignore my bad speeling (I flunked spelling 3 times in grade school).

I've got an obvious thing to check that has caught me before. Are you sure your air cleaner housing is not plugged up with a mouse nest? and is the filter clean?

    Re: Need An Expect!

Thanks for recognizing this and apologizing. As others have said, this board is friendly and flame-free and people are only trying to help.

A national forum like this isn't the best place to ask for a specific garage to take your Jeep in your hometown for repairs. Surely there are local Jeep boards that you could go to for that kind of advice, or even yellow pages. This is the type of place where Jeepers fix things ourselves and we are focused on sharing our advice on how to fix your problem yourself rather than recommending mechanics. You'll also find that being specific is helpful. If you only want a list of recommended mechanics, ask for that rather than advice on how to fix a poorly running Jeep if that's not what you're after.

If you have taken your Jeep to a reputable mechanic 4 times and they still haven't fixed the problem I would take it somewhere else. Seriously, the carb and electronics on a 232 are as simple as it gets in basic automotive terms, and any ASE certified mechanic should be able to have it purring smooth as a kitten in no time. It's as simple as gas, air and spark.

Best of luck with your Jeep.

    Re: Need An Expect!

thanks for the apology. I think it's fair to say everyone is prone to a bad day here and there. I also think it's fair to say that all the folks on this forum are familiar with jeep related frustration. reading about your problem brings to mind the old saying " if you want the job done right, you may have to do it yourself". This is something A LOT of jeep guys believe in. It may seem like a greek at first but with some patients and an open mind anyone can learn how to work on the extraordinarily simple designs of these old jeeps. Between this site and shop manuals you'll find all the info you need and more.

Where have you taken it? I do my own work, but I know the owner of Avenger and several folks I know have had good luck with them. Tanner has newer owners and I don't know them. Predetor does not have a 'good' reputation in my book unless you just want something bolted on.

I'm no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once!:D
Start simple, remove the air cleaner and see if you can see a light through it.
Check your choke, by cracking the throttle and seeing if it closed as it sits-COLD.
Pull the plugs, if they are black and snooty, replace- a gas fouled plug makes it run like crap.
Fire it up, see if the choke comes off, (I beleive the '74 has an electric choke but time and people change.
See if it opens all the way, as it warms, (fast idle??).
If it does and the air filter is clean button that up. (is your air filter housing cleaned out, can it draw air in from somewhere)?
It might be a float sinking in the carb, or crap in there causing more gas than it can handle being dumped in the intake.
Turn it off hot and see if alot of steam is comming out of the carb, (gas evaporating in the engine), if it is a good sign too much fuel going in-carb is sick.
    check the point gap/dwell.
A weak coil will make it hard to fire up, run crappy.
See if the timing is close,(best way with a older motor, turn the dist til you get the fastest idle, then back a tad til it fires good- hot,a too far advance timing will cause it crank, stop, crank stop or crank slowly, or ping like a son of a bee.
All of the above is easy-cheese stuff, (well coil checking is a bit tough.
I'm gonna bet the carb is sick and needs to be rebuilt.
1 bbl carbs are the easiest to do.
Go to a parts store and buy a good manual or get one from any number of parts places on line, look it over and 99% of the time, it'll walk you through the problem.
When I'm about to tackle a probelm, my manuals are bathroom and breakfsat reading, til I understand what I need to do, works for well over 40 years!

Warloch, I do not want to mention specific names as my experience is only anecdotal. Thanks for ideas of where to go. The information I have gotten from this thread will help me talk more intelligently.
Colojeepguy, Thanks for the input. I will have to check Butch's out and I won't mention your name.
