What do you prefer and why? I'm going to probably use one or the other. I know that they use Eastwood on oil rig parts down in the Bayou. But, I've noticed that most folks seem to use POR 15 on vehicles. Any reason for that?

Always used POR 15, never tried East6wood. If you use POR 15 check out the 1/2 pint cans in the 6 pack on their web site. I have probably thrown away more POR 15 than I have painted with, it does not keep well once opened. Better to ruin a 1/4 pint than 1/2 quart.

I have used POR 15 a ton and I found that if you place a sheet of sayran (sp?) wrap over the top before you put the can top back on it does not harden up on you

The Easdtwood rust encapsulator has been on my Jeep for 5 years now with no rust or scratches on it. I sand blasted my frame then coated it with Eastwood and then used 2 coats of chassis black over that. Por15 has to be painted over as it has no UV protection and the color will fade in open areas from the sun. Eastwood does not need to be painted over to have UV protection.

I used the Eastwood Chassis Black over Rust Encapslulator and love it. The stuff is very tough. I applied it after a pressure wash and sandblast and it withstands some pretty rough treatment. UV properties were the main reason, also the convenience of rattle cans. There is a lot of paint in those cans, only took 3 cans to do the complete chassis, and touch-ups always match.

POR-15 seems to be pretty sweet. Had it on my frame in my garage for 1 month and no scratches! :)

Mcruff's right about the lack of uv protection in Por15, will fade in a hurry if not painted over, but it does work as advertised.

I prefer hammerite rust cap.. much cheaper than the others and I've had it on my jeep frame for over 15 years and I still can't get it off... haha

ok, can i use POR on TOP of plain old red oxide primer?

or do i need to remove all of that (red oxide) before applying POR...

and do i need a special paint to go OVER POR if i use it, or can i use maybe rust-o-leum gloss black?

POR15 and Rust Encapsulator are suppose to be put on bare metal. You can then use whatever you want over them, chassis black is colored more like what came from the factory, Rustoleum will be very glossy and may not hold up as well in the sun as the Chassis paint.

Have you though about putting the can in the refrigerator after it is opened, the cold might keep it from setting up.

good call, the plastic wrap has always worked for me just fine, but the thought of POR 15 next to beer sounds like a great combination!

ok so back to this hopefully one last time

as you know i have red oxide primer on the frame whic i know needs to come off prior to applying POR...

    heres the question...

i found the super starter kit for POR for $20 which comes with the cleaner and degreaser etc etc...

after removing the red oxide, do i need to apply the cleaner/degraser prior to applying POR or can i just go straight to the POR from the can, with a brush/small roller?

thanks guys... i promise, i ll make some progress to show yall... =)

One easy trick to re-using POR is to store the can upside-down. Thar way it skins over on the bottom and not the top.

Before you remove all that primer try a test patch to see how the por adheres to the primer, their web site says it will stick to paint as long as it can get a bite on it.
