Hotwiring safely

    I hope to never lose my keys when out in the boondocks, but if so, is this method of hotwiring safe (as far as not causing any other problems)?

    On my CJ 5 , would it be ok to run a wire from positive battery terminal to the ignition side of the ballast resistor ( so that the points are still protected by the resistor when running) to energize the coil, and then just jump the solenoid at the starter relay? All of this is under the hood and easily accessible, unlike the mess behind the dashboard which is extremely hard to get to.

    That's the way I'd do it and I can't see any problems if everything was ok when you lost the key. A hide-a-key is cheap insurance. You still might have to hotwire if the ignition switch or solenoid failed though.

    big screw driver across the points on the back of the starter

    This stuff is illegal in 9 countries. they've done studies, you know. They say 60% of the time, it works every time
