    I'd suggest going with U-joints & a shear pin.

Just how much do you think that it will cost to build the "box" that you are thinking about?? My buddy here in town has one and I think that he would sell it for $250-$300. It looks to me that it would be cheaper to buy one built than to do the trial and error thing but that's just my .02
I'm sure that you could get the shaft thing and the flanges with it as well.

I'm thinking in the $150-200 range for the box.
I know it will probably be much easier to just go out and find one, but it's so much more fun to make one! haha

By swapping gears inside the original rear gear reduction box you could run two maybe three different speeds. I forget what the reduction ratio was, Bill

    Part number 640477 20 tooth
    640478 24 tooth.
Now this is for the rear gear box or rear pto not the front one attached to the transfercase.

Thanks for the owner's manual pages!

I've checked out farmjeep.com and tried to contact them but never have gotten any response. I'm thinking the owners of that site don't update it much anymore... too bad because its a pretty cool site.

    Thanks,
    Evan

I know this is a 5 year old thread, but did anything ever come of this project? My Jeep has a ramsey PT-2 without the gearbox, and I've yet to find a rear gearbox that isn't extremely expensive:(

I just read through this thread for the first time and have a couple of comments...The chain and sprocket idea's output is going to rotate in the opposite direction of the gear driven one (unless there's an idler gear in that box that I am not aware of) and what he is referring to as a "slipper" clutch is usually called an over-running clutch-it lets the pto transmit power to the driven implement but not vice versa.(The inertia of a spinning bush hog can act like a flywheel and make it hard to stop since the pto is couple to the axles even when the clutch is disengaged) A lot of bush hogs have clutch in the PTO shaft to absorb the impact of hitting stumps etc. and I think that is what some folks were interpreting his slipper clutch as being... my $0.02
