    mb82 I feel great!

Post the specs of the motor and drivetrain. Those mechanics are not right. Yeah you won't get Prius Mileage but still your not going to get big rig mileage.

Just out of curiosity, since you say it is a ’69 Chevy 350, are you still running the points ignition? Just wondering because when I first got my Jeep it was running a points distributor and while it seemed healthy enough, ran pretty good, it only got about 8 MPG. When I converted it to electronic I not only gained better throttle response and power throughout the rev range but a nice boost in fuel mileage. That’s a big part of how I’m getting the fuel mileage I am now.

Yes point ignition....well guys after mesuring I hate to say it but i was wrong, a 6.2 diesel will not fit without cutting up the jeeps inner fenders which I'm not willing to do.

So back to the drawing board......

    What about a supercharged 4.3?

Well if you just want to go swapping stuff around go for it, that’s part of the fun of Jeeping anyway, and at least a 4.3 V6 will share motor mounts and transmission bell housing patterns with your 350.
But you don’t need too. You can get better gas mileage out of your 350 cheaper than doing another swap.
Can you tell us more about your engine? Stock or aftermarket heads, intake, headers, cam specs., pistons (flat, dished or domed). Anything more you can tell us?

For the $ any other conversion would take, you could put all new vortech top end on the 350, fuel injection and all-or at least the TBI setup. Both will get you some decent mileage and great off road performance. Even an aftermarket FI system will be less than another engine swap.

I still think the sbc platform is the greatest tinkertoy set ever made and wouldn't even consider anything else for a transplant (except for maybe a LS based sbc)-especially in something already set up for it. If you want more torque, just turn it into a 383.

Personally - I love the V6s, but if you already have the V8 stuffed in there work with it. We used to do alot with the small V8s. Do the top end like Duffer says at a minimum. I think you could redo the whole thing for less than most motor swaps and get exactly what you want with the right build.

The 6.2/6.5 will bolt to the engine mounts and trans. You will need a diesel torque converter and a governor for the transmission. You will also need a vacuum pump. The weight is about 700 lbs. I installed one in a Grand Cherokee. It was a tight fit.

Why bother with a turbo if you are not towing? A naturally aspirated 6.2/6.5 produces enough to move a Jeep along. You will want to also drop your gear ratio to bring the rpm into a sweet spot, about 1800- 2000 rpm for maximum mpg.

cool. But i have decided that its just to freaking huge, i dont want to cut up my jeep to do this so its out of the option. When i measured last night for the needed 28" width, that was into my inner fenders on my ECJ5.

So for the motor its an all stock 69 4 bolt 350 out of an hi-po nova that was completly rebuilt.... corvette block hugger manifolds.

I have considered something like fast ez efi, but again i want to run around on waste oil.

What about an om616 diesel? It has a little more power than the old perkins diesels(72 hp) are dead simple and with the gears i have should have enough power to move it around?

The carter AVS does not like being put in a rough riding vehicle. Not enough control of the secondaries.

The quadrajet or a vacuum secondary Holley would not mind bouncing around as much.

No. I found a local wheeler that had the engine for sale he was originally going to put in his samurai, and got discouraged.

i ordered this kit from Bob http://www.transmissionadapters.com/Mercedes diesel.htm

will be here some time next week.

also bought the oil filter remote kit above but have not heard anything back from him yet....

Some Basic info about the jeep

    1971 Jeep CJ5 350 th350 dana 18 with warn overdrive and dana 44 rear dana 30 front 4.27's

Well i bought the om 616 as noted. Ordered the adapter kits from Bob http://www.transmissionadapters.com/...s%20diesel.htm

and ordered the oil filter conversion setup from here

the stuff will not be here till next week, and im in the middle of moving into my new house that finally has a 40x60 shop so this should be an interesting buildup.

First order of business will be to confirm the overall excellent appearing condition of the engine. From there i will be gutting the 350 that's in the jeep now out and disassembling/taking off the front clip to get the engine lined/leveled up in there as best as possible.

After examining the factory motor mounts im not sure if i wish to keep them or build my own. My intentions is to keep it as much Chevy/Mercedes as possible so if for some reason it does go tits up i can walk into any parts store and get what is needed.

My next consideration will go to the transmission. Since it has a th350 in it now im going to locate and rebuild a th350c

that has the lockup clutch to give me 100% use of the diesels power band and lower my rpms even more.

after the lockup tranny is done and in there i think i will concentrate on getting the rig torn apart and i will be blasting/rhino lining the entire tub inside the passenger area and underneath the tunnel/firewall for sound/vibration dampening

I reviewed pages and pages of possible transmissions last night, and found very very few possible 5 speeds that are worth a darn with the gm pattern that don't weight a ton.

Among some that i found, well really the only one i found worth a dam is the nv3500 that came behind 4.3's and 350's....any ideas?

Do most people avoid autos because in stock form don't provide 100% power grip/lockup from idle up? But with the push button activated tc lockup i would think that would be a non issue. Or is the TH350C's tc not able to lockup until a certain rpm no matter what?

I think most people around here avoid auto trannys due to the extra length they put on the drive train, they don't want to change u joints every other month. But with the proper planning it can be overcome.

  17. waynaferd

    waynaferd Hey, ya'll watch this!!

How come nobody ever considers the 2.8 or 2.9 GM Atlas all aluminum 4 cylinders in colorado/canyons? They're close to 200 ft lbs and HP, weigh under 300 pounds, and have a standard SBC V8 bell pattern.

That would give you some movement and mileage!!

As soon as I get further on mine and have the $$, that's my intended powerplant!!

True. In my setup i have double sided flex joints on each side of the shaft plus its a slip shaft, i never remember what they are called though.

Ive never heard of such an engines, I thought that they were inline 5's? Even if they have the standard SBC pattern, the main issue would be running the engine in a non native vehicle, but like most things it can be done im sure.

Those engines if they are 4's and produce that kind of power sound like a good idea.

unless you have a CJ6 or fullsize, the 5speed is a no go. it's just way too long. you need a truck 4spd and add an OD to the transfercase.

yes space is of concern, my drive shaft is already tiny.

This is again why i think a TH350C is my best option, this coupled with my warn overdrive i have on the dana 18 and im about as good as its going to get.
