Noise

I'm rebuilding a 1960 CJ5 with the orginal motor. I just got it back on the road for a test drive. The transmission is fairly loud once I get to 40 mph. Is this normal? Also what is the top speed of the Jeep I should expect? I'm not much of a gear-head, but I'm learning. Thanks for any assistance.

noise or chatter is sometimes in transfer case - Intermediate gear shaft - drop transfer case pan and see if there is any side to side movement in intermediate gear - its just thought - all this stuff is turning with a D18 . did you check oil in trans

 

Go under and check the fluid levels in both the tranny and the transfercase.
Mine will do that when the fluids get low.. Then I just top them off with gear oil . Have to look, but because of the temps around here in the summer (from the end of March to Halloween) I run heavier gear oil 90/140 I believe. And check the differentials at the same time. Same oil.

And are you sure it is the Tranny/tc and not the engine? 45 or 50 mph will have your engine turning at around 3000 rpm, and can be pretty noisy.

My top speed in mine if 50.
I didn't buy it to go fast.
The books all say you can go 65, but I think anything over 50 is pushing it to hard.

 

Are you running locking hubs or drive flanges? If it still has the flanges on it, the drivetrain noise can be more noticeable(?) than with locking hubs. Not sure this is what you're hearing, just a thought.
