    HI guys,

I have never been a big fan of additives and etceterini when it comes to dumping things into my motor, except for Marvel Mystery oil which apparently really works.....I think..:?
So now I was talking to a buddy at work who tinkers with older beater cars and I was telling him my CJ (f-head 4) will need a rebuild someday (it's pretty smoky) and he said "Oh man until that day, use RESTORE brand Engine Restorer, stuff works great..."

"Hmmmmm" I thought, I use non-detergent oil based on advice of both the PO and this group... Aren't i trying to NOT clean all the gunk out of those little nooks and crannies? How does this RESTORE stuff work? If it works at all.....

    All .02 appreciated....

I haven't researched it, but I put it in my '75 CJ5 (258-6) for most of the time I had it (up until I quit using it a few years ago and dismantled it for a resto) and the engine seemed to always run fine. I never did anything more than just putt around the gravel roads with it, though, so it wasn't quite as stressed as a normal daily-driver engine would be. I've kinda shyed away from it in all my other engines - if they do burn any oil, I just let them burn it and try to keep up with the change intervals. :D I guess my logic is that Restore is only a band-aid and the engine will have to be rebuilt eventually, anyway. And maybe I've read too much about unecessary additives in oil possibly doing harm to your engine. :p (I.e., 10W40 weight oil having too many additives to give it its "40" rating and being unstable, as opposed to, say, 10W30 with only a 20-point viscosity spread.) Here are a few discussions I found on the internet after Googling Engine Restorer:

Googling it for yourself should turn up some good reading. :)

I've had nothing but BAD things happen with a similar product called Rislone Engine Restorer. It freed up a bunch of crud that eventually plugged up a rod bearing oil hole and caused major engine damage. I'd never use it again. I used it on two well worn engines with the same results. I'd say if it needs a rebuild, do it and skip the additive. Just my 2 cents.

I used it years ago. This stuff works by filling small voids in the cylinder wall , the heat of ignition solidifies it. You need to put more in with every oil changel It helps a crappy engine a bit. If your rig looks like the mosqiuto fogger driving down the road and you add oil with every tank full of gas because you burn that much this ain't gonna make you happy. It will help a so-so engine.
