I recently bought a 1955 CJ and although "cluster" gage doesn't work, I was still wondering if anyone can shed some light on it. I have not seen another one like mine. All the ones I have come across run up to 9 / 90 mph or 85 mph. I am looking for a place to buy some replacement parts and some general information on it.

By the way I have a real early CJ number 2171 to be exact if that makes a difference.

    The serial number is 5754812171

    Thanks!

The "silver face" speedo was a '55 only item on CJ's.

If the speedometer function not working or the gas/oil temp gauges?

if the speedo isn't working check the drive cable that comes from the back of the xfer case & open the speedo case to see if the grease has congealed gumming up the works. this is a common occurance & when it happens the cable tends to snap.

If the gauges are the problem check the instrument voltage regulator- it's a little box on the back of the speedo- it reduces battery voltage to 5 volts to power the gauges. If you check the gauges with the speedo assembly out of the dash make sure it's case is well grounded with a jumper cable- without a ground to the speedo case the regulator & gauges can smoke :(

    Your's is the 2171st CJ5 built :)

Hey thanks for the information.... I plan to rebuild it as none of the "cluster" works. However, there are an assortment of of additional gages across the whole dash, clearly installed by previous owners. I need to find some replacement parts like the needle... but I am sure I could rob it off a different "cluster." I don't know yet.

Yes... it is officially number 2171 I will fix my original post.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the link! The more information the better! Still looks like its going to be quite the "mini" project the more I learn.
