10 inch brakes, self adjusting

Did the 10" brake system come with the self adjusting mechanism? My '66 had nothing installed.

My 67 has none. My 71 did.

 

the 10" brakes on my '65 are not self adjusting.

 

my 9in brakes on my 60 arnt either but I would like to add that feature if possible.

 

The late 10" Bendix brakes were self adjusting. The earlier ones did not have the self adjusting feature but were self energizing like the later ones. Not sure when the self adjusters were added but I suspect in the '68-'69 year range. I do not have anything to substantiate this, just a "feeling" based on when other changes happened. Maybe Oldtime, Jpflat2a, or Timgr can substantiate when the change actually happened.

Re-building my 67. It had no self-adjusters, can they be added?

 

I'm sure they could but finding the parts might be difficult. Not a lot of support for the 10" brakes anymore. I'd put a wtb ad in the classifieds. Someone may have some laying around from a brake upgrade or part-out.

 

My early 70 has the 10" with self adjusters.

 

my 61 with 9in brakes could use some too

 

goto napa they had everything i needed when i did brakes front and rear. my 71 had self adjusters. i forgot to mention that i went to one of the distribution centers for napa and they had all the stuff for the brakes.

 

I replaced the self adjusting 10" brakes on my '71 with 11X2's from a '76 model. I have the 10 inchers complete with drums if you are interested.

 

So what i'm reading is that they "did" come as self adjusting. Which means that the parts are out there as Oddfire stated. Good info to have for sure. Thanks for the info guys!!!
Gibson...I'm only looking for the self adjusting parts...good to go on drums and shoes...I'd be interested in those if you'd like to make a deal...drop me note.

Actually the 10" CJ brakes are Wagner manufactured brake assemblies not Bendix.
The change to self adjusting 10" Wagner brakes occurred between January and September of 1967.
That's between the middle to the end of the 1968 model year.
AFAIK self ajusters should be on all 1969 CJ's.

It's a funny thing.
I'm sure the 10" CJ brakes are Wagners because they have a Wagner part number stamped onto the backing plates.
(# begins with FF)
The 11" CJ brakes are Bendix manufactured and therefore they do not use Wagner part numbers.
That said I really don't know any of the differences between the Bendix and Wagner corporations.

To me the terms "self energizing" seem to be totally misleading since the brakes don't apply themselves.

 

Yeah, the Wagner and Bendix operate the same and visually very similar. Probably why I thought the 10's were Bendix. I never looked that close though as when I'm working on them typically I'm converting to 11" drums or disc brakes.
The self energizing part can be misleading until people realize once the brakes are applied the way they operate actually increases braking force with little to no further pedal pressure. Hence the self energizing part. It can be confusing.

 

Yeah payback ... I recall that you corrected me a time or two.
Besides standing correct sure beats laying down crooked.
