So i finished rebuilding the AX% and have it in the jeep. Will drive it tomorrow after i fill it and put the crossmember back on. I pulled the transmission because it had worn synchros causeing it to grind the gears each time you downshifted. It was fine going forward. I parked the jeep before i pulled the tranny because it was making bad noises in 2nd gear.

So after tearing it apart i did not find anything really noticably wrong. The synchros did not seem worn, there were still triangle shaped. I found one synchro that looked like it shifted inside the hub and gashed all three openings that the shift "Dogs" fit into. I forgot to keep track of which gear it belonged to. In general all the synchros were very dark and kind of rough on the outside.

So i guess the million dollar question is why would i hard the gear grinding when shifting? Thankfully i had no damage what so ever on my gears. And this is after 10 years of wonky shifting.

Wrong oil sometimes causes issues. I havent had one of these apart yet. Did the syncro grab tight when you had it out? If the brass grooves or teeth are worn on the syncros they don't slow the gear down fast enough. Same thing if the syncro uses a cluth friction type material.

Excessive end play will cause gear clashing also

Not sure on either of them. the grooves were not worn. Only the outside seemed real rough. The jeep had long periods of time of non use so i am guessing the oil may have eaten things. It was funny to see the oil level mark on the inside of the transmission housings.

Here are some pics of the offending synchro

From the size of it it looks to be the synchro for first or second gear. It had shifted at some point and since it is so shiney it was probably recent because i had a bad noise in 2nd gear when i took the jeep off the road.

That wear on the outside doesn't look good. I would assume that would cause some issues. Hard to tell from that picture but looks like the friction material is worn too.

Is the friction material in teh inside? If so, it has the ":rings" in there that looked to be in ok shape, they were not wore away by any means.
