I have noise from my big hole transfer case that I rebuilt. Its the same noises I had in the small hole one I had in there before, just louder. Seems there is gear lash that may also have something to do with the output shaft splines. Everything went together fine and it didn't look totally wore out. I also think the 4x4 shift fork is worn out causing unwanted movement of that clutch gear which also makes some partial engagement and noise. With my old transfer case sitting in my shop I can turn the output shaft and recreate the lash noise, although quieter.

The question is, where do i get new parts that are of good quality? A terra flex gear set or Advance Adapters are expensive and don't include new output shafts. I also don't need lower gearing as I already have an SM420.

Lots of crown and omix stuff out there and I know it is sometimes suspect in quality. I also don't want to buy a used set that may or may not have issues.

The transfer case works fine, it just makes noise when shifting and low speed coasting to a stop that may be due to the worn 4WD shift fork not keeping the clutch gear in the the correct placement.

At this point I will need to budget and will be driving this mess until it makes me nuts or blows up.

So, where to buy new gears, shift forks and output shaft?

The only real source I found when rebuilding mine was watching ebay for NOS parts. It took a while but, I found most of what I wanted and needed. Not terribly expensive for much of it, believe it or not. I tried buying "good used" from a source and found that the stuff I took out of my case was better than their good used. I was going for a nice tight transfer case just because I want to see what it feels like. Haven't installed yet so, no results can be offered as yet.

These things don't have to be in great shape to work. I learned a lot rebuilding mine, thanks to members here. I learned that the cases will work with junk stuff inside because the guy who rebuilt mine originally put all my old worn out stuff back in and it worked fine for years until the threaded end of the rear output snapped off.

Check my thread, if it's still around, on my rebuild. Lots of good "transfer case for dummies" type questions and answers. PM me or call me if I can help.

Depending on what you need - I have several cases I've stripped down. Trying to go from 13 to 4 good cases over time :D

You might check with Herm the overdrive guy. He sometimes has stuff available.

Also you could try Daryl. He always has lots of stuff that he collects from around here.
