134 Hunting

    My '62 134 f-head w/ Carter carb, runs OK, a little hard to start, but hunts when cold. What is the best way to eliminate the hunting.
    Also, maybe related, maybe not, there is no timing mark on the pulley.
    I'm pretty much in the dark here. Hopefully someone can offer a little advice.

    Hunting is a legitimate term for the issue.

    I would consider "Hunting" to traditionally mean that the rpms are not steady but migrate up and down in a slow cycle. It is a regular oscillation as the engine "hunts" for equilibrium.

    Tends to be associated with a lean condition.

    Surging (IMHO) would be more like a brief sudden increase in speed. but if it was repetitive, it would be about the same thing.

    There is a small notch on the back sheave of the crank pulley marking top dead center. I agree with PeteL sounds like a lean mixture, try turning the air screw in a little bit, 1/8th turn and see if it makes a difference.

    Thanks for the advice. Fixed small vacuum leak and did carb. adjustment. Running OK now but still concerned about timing. Cannot find notch on flywheel pulley. Any suggestions?

    The notch is at the top of the side of the pulley closest to the timing gear cover. It's not very big so if not marked at all it could be easily missed.

    Bring the engine around to TDC on #1 by putting your thumb over the plug hole, pulling on the fan. When you feel the compression, it will be close.

    Then look closely for the timing notch. When you find it put a little white paint on it.
