Hello all, have a 66, with the dauntless V6.
Looking for some help with part numbers or resources for the fuel pump ....the one with the extra fitting for the return line. I can't seem to find one online that matches...has the fittings at the same angles...or it doesn't have a picture to confirm being correct. Greatly appreciated
    Thanks...rick

Thanks mortten.....I just assumed all years for the V6 would be the same. I didn't think of trying a different year. I'll be checking it out....Thanks

I think you can plug the return port on the pump if you don't use it. Looked at one the other with undersea tank and no return line to the tank but the pump had the return port on it. Think it's a bubble flare deal coming out of the pump. The owner just had a piece of rubber fuel line coming off it it and plugged that with a bolt stuffed into the rubber line and secured with 2 hose clamps. Kinda butch but it doesn't leak.

Hey wheelie.....currently I have the pump with only 2 lines(in & out). I've been having vapor lock issues since I got it....and after many hours of carb tuning and researching the net....I finally went back to the basics....the P.O. used the wrong pump....it's supposed to be the 3 line model which has the return line back to the tank that helps prevent vapor lock....when I looked up the pump for my year (on varying sites)...it only listed the 2 line model....mortten (member here) suggested I look up the model for a 69'....well low and behold, it is the one....ordered it up, and we'll see what happens. When I got this jeep....there were a lot of cross pollination from different years. I've had to learn by trial & error, and a lot of reading on this great site. I just assumed the P.O. had it right and I went along with it....but after reading the TSM a little closer....the dauntless needs this special 3 line pump for vapor lock prevention. Thanks for the reply.....with these older jeeps....the more info we have, the better off it'll make it....thanks

I agree. I just bought the 2 port model from rock auto a few weeks ago.Going a recently purchased 3B that has a 225 in it and undersea tank with no return port. Not sure how it's gonna work out. I may end up having to get the port pump and modify the tank with an return line.

The 225 also has a heat shield for, I think, the inline filter (?????, foggy memory) that resides beside timing cover.

Have never run a return line on the 225 in my CJ2A
Have never ever had any vapor lock issues.
    Never, ever.

Might be the heat from the exhaust...but yesterday after a drive, I shut it off and watched bubbles going up through the filter from the pump...tells me there is some heat build up from the fuel not having a pressure relief. We'll see when I get the new pump in.

The return line keeps cool fuel circulating through the pump to prevent vapor lock, and keeps the pressure down going into the carb. The TSM says 2.5 psi....i'm getting 5 psi now without the return line....probably pushing past the needle valve on occasions.

I did have vapor lock problems with the 225 in my 2A. Return line fixed it.

As an aside, there are, or at least were, in line fuel filters available that have a return port of sorts.

Late 70's and 80's Chrysler products used the 3 connection fuel filter.

I tried one with out a return one time and it did cause problems until I installed a regulator to keep from over pressuring the carb. I still had the heat shield on and did not have vapor lock problems but where I live it is pretty cool. I went back to the return and then never had any problems. I know that both NAPA and O'Reillys both can get them.
On another note of something I have found through the years is that the older pumps had a lot of problem with the diaphrams leaking and gas coming out of the vents above the diaphrams . I "think" it might be because the rubber in them were not good for the ethanol in the gas now. Just something to keep in mind.
Also the below picture I inserted using Focker's new method. Works just great. Have to say a thanks again to Focker.

My return line has been plugged for the last 20+ years and no vapor lock problems or any other fuel related problems.

I have a pump on the way. I find it easier to buy online then to go to my FLAPS who rarely have anything in stock. Most of the time I have to have the part number because they can't seem to find one in their systems....we'll see.....

'62 CJ5 with the stock gas tank but a Dauntless conversion -
My brother replaced a problematic electric pump with a mechanical pump and I thought all was well until an hour ago. A full tank, but the carb ran dry while at cruising speed. I have a clear filter before the carb and it was near empty. Cranking seems to produce some activity in the line (movement inside the filter) but no flow of gas. I pulled the fuel line at the tank and a somewhat steady stream of gas came out.
Could this be vapor lock? What exactly is vapor lock, what causes it and what are the symptoms?
The fuel pump is a single line pump (no return line that I can see). There's not a second line to the gas tank that I'm aware of (pretty sure it's the original 1962 pre-dauntless tank).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    JP

When that happens, you might try cracking the gas cap and see if there is a whoosh of air. If there is no return line and the cap is not venting, the draw of fuel can pull a bit of a vacuum on the tank that the pump eventually can't overcome.

Also, did you happen to look at the fuel pump eccentric on the camshaft when you had the pump off? Those can be prone to wear. A big groove in there will diminish the effectiveness of the pump.

Just a couple of things to check.

Thanks. No vacuum at the gas cap. I may pull the fuel line at the carb, put it in a bottle, crank the engine and see if I get a decent flow. I suppose if it flows well, then a stuck float would be the only thing that would be causing back pressure, right? I may re-address some kind of blockage at the tank.
