Grinding noise and no starts got old real fast. Also worse and worse, it was time to pull it apart change out the flywheel, reseal the engine/transmission/transfercase. While I am at it going to change out the engine mounts, clutch and throw out bearing.

Larry from Lynnwood Auto Electric rebuilt my starter. The bendix gear was toast, he aslo installed all new bushings. One day turn around and a really good price. So thats ready to go back in.

    The other problem.

    That's nice to see!

Much easier then a floor jack!

Its amazing how large this transmission is. Surprised it was offered behind such a power house as a hurricane F-Head.

    Ready, for disassembly.

Besides NAPA, anyone have a good source for clutch, seals and gaskets?

Nothing but oily dirt and more oily dirt just caked on everywhere...

Cant even tell where bolts and springs are...
They all clean up pretty well though.

Also found out that this has the optional 9-1/4" clutch, which limited my options of clutches and places where I can buy one. no one local to me had it not even the clutch and brake specific places. Ordered one, its more then likely an Omix-Ada part...On the plus side the even though the fly wheels are different the ring gear is the same, so getting one of those coming in.

Quick question. In the picture above you can see the detent springs for the transfercase. they appear to be different, one is slightly longer and stiffer. Anyone know where each one goes? I didnt notice the difference when I pulled them out until i had them cleaned up.

After cleaning up a bit more, I realized that the front bearing cap is a bit damaged. Luckily a forum member had the one I need. So the transfercase is on a slight hold till that part comes in.
I decided to do a what little work I could do to it.
Some of the other parts I want to change out. Front and center is the gasket and seal set for the T98A
    [IMG]
Also checked the valve lash. all were good but the #2/3 intake. cleaned up and resembled with new gaskets.
Drove out the rear main seal. Unfortunately NAPA sold me the rope seal instead of the two piece hard seal. I didnt check the seal when I walked out or until I went to install the new one. I think I am absolutely done with them, this is on top of other many poorly made parts and screws ups and frankly charging way more for the exact same part I can get at Orielys. Had to order one so more time waiting.

Took apart the front, cleaned up, resealed and put back together.

Old engine mounts. Installed new ones.
just waiting on parts at this point. Havnt started on the transmission yet as enough of this thing is apart at the moment.

Got home from a two week work trip and had more parts waiting for me. Was able to reinstall the oil pan after installing the new rear main seal. I fought the rear main seal for a bit but after loosening up the crankshaft I was able to slide it in.

new bearing cap from a forum member wheelie.
    New 9-1/4" clutch
    [IMG]
Flywheel reground and new ring gear installed. the ring gear is pretty much what led me down this rabbit hole
    [IMG]
Transfer case coming back together. I also had to order some Permatex Supper 300 as none of the local stores carried it.
Make sure you place your ebrake lever in first before you install the backing plate other wise you will be doing it over again. I had forgotten this step but cought it pretty early.
I had ordered the Novak reseal kit for the D-18. The oil pan gasket is a real nice, its nice and thick not cork. Which I think should keep the leaks to a minimum
    [IMG]
Transfer case all done. I also finished up the transmission. I only installed a rear oil seal on it and replaced the gasket that sits between the transmission and the adapter plate. A few other small things and I should be ready to but it all back together.

One of the cages for the center floor cover failed while taking it out. Luckily for me Olympic 4x4 in Snohomish was kind enough to let me steel one from another jeep. pretty good guys with a good sized inventory.
Clutch installed. I had forgotten to get the clutch alignment tool. Luckily I had a spare input shaft from my '47
    [IMG]
Had to take the fuel tank out to install the top cover on the transmission. The floors are really solid. just a bit of surface rust at the back there. Nothing rotted through though.

Time for a spin. Almost, the TJ's slave cylinder started leaking. So onto the next project.

I must say Jeep CJ Rebuilder's Manual is a great book. I used it many times for reference.
