IMO no reason for it if the tire is not on the side...i removed mine when I put the rear tank in many years ago.

I've let things drag out - too much other 'stuff' going on so I've only been able to make some piecemeal advance on things.

I did manage to get the Floors up front closed in to just the tunnel area left to finish

Tying to decide how I'm going to handle the final section on the back of the tranny opening. I got my shot bag filled, so I may try to form the section, or just use angles like the stock one is setup.

In the meantime - I decided that I was getting too close to being done so I cut some holes in the rear wheel wells..

Then formed a patch section for it... playing with the shot bag and forming hammers...

What do you know - I put in the wheel house notch - well almost - got to finish the bottom there.

I've got the holes all filled on the passenger side - and I did go ahead and put the spare support bracket in. I'll just have to remember to put the fuel filler on the Driver side on this rig.

Hope to get some shop time this weekend. I'd like to get the floors finished, put some seam sealer in and prime it before things start getting cold. But the way the weather has been, I should have close to Christmas instead of mid October this year.

I was asked a bit ago to post pics of how I fill holes in the tub. Since I'm convinced there are goblins out in the shop with drills and bits working on this tub, I've got a few to fill...

Small ones - I use .023 Mig wire on body metal as a rule. In this first one you can see the holes on the rails of the tub I'm filling. I basically go in sideways to the hole with the welder like I'm showing. Start on one side and with a C motion fill it across... quickly. You do need to watch the heat and puddle so it does not 'drop out' on you, move it across. If it's going to drop out, pause for a sec or so and then keep going.

Larger holes require a filler, or something to give the weld metal something to lay on. I've used the curls I get form my air shears as a 'fill rod' type of deal - especially when the metal has gotten thin.

My favorite way is with the magnetic holder on or with a copper head. I've got some paddles with copper I use, but this is the easiest as you just stick it on the metal (I like on the facing side you will see better). Almost forgot to mention - cool by dipping in a bucket of water and CLEAN it between holes with a wire brush. Keeps things working and welding well that way.

Then fill the hole - using the same method I talked about above...

The facing will look like this when your done.

Just hit them with a 60 grit flap disk to clean them up and make sure the weld is solid. Repeat as needed.

Time for another installment on the build - ya, I'm only about 9 months behind where I wanted to be... But then we know the best laid plans of Mice and Men...

Did I mention I'm not a real fan of 'body work' or 'paint'... I like how it finishes, just not my cup of tea. Anyhow - following the theme of the build "solid but not perfect on the body" I've gotten it 'close enough' to start putting paint on places.

Starting with the undercarriage - its above 50 (about 60) today, and I got a bit of free time so I put some tape down to keep the spray off the 'pretty side'....

Its SOOO NICE to paint this on the rotisserie - I expected it to take a couple hours and be a PITA based on doing this before. Took @ 1.5 hours to tape and paint. I think it came out good and just what I'm wanting.

Tried to get an up close pic - your supposed to be able to paint over this rubberized undercoating if you wish. I'm just going to leave most of it black - might spray bomb a few places if I want a bit of body color match.

This is the stuff I used - just for the record - it took 3 & about a 1/4 cans to do what I did. Got a couple spots I'll do more on around the tunnel once its finished and on the bottom of those tins for the bolt on covers. I might do it for the inside of the front wheel wells since I did the back - we will see how the mood hits me then. Either way, they will match - front and back.

This is the color paint I'll be using. Not a 'green' fan, but my niece picked the color when it was going to be hers. I have the paint (2 gals) so that's what I'll spray it with.

You can get the same color in spray cans - my '51 is New Holland Red - and it makes touching up from work or trees much easier. As I said - just want it to be solid and look nice - but NO BONDO. Never had good luck with that on a trail rig in the long run.

Depending on how much the weather cooperates - the final paint may need to wait till spring. Still deciding if the windshield and grill will be body color or black... or white... Its got white spoked wheels...

Nice work. I'm in the same boat with weather and getting paint down. I'm completely in primer, but decided to replace two of the rear tub supports. That was three days ago and then the temps dropped in the teens at night.

Ya - speaking of 'two rear tub supports' - mine are not in yet either.... With the body lift, I need to look at how I want to do that for better support, so that's an item for when I get it back on the frame and do more fitting.

Thanks to the hoist and rotisserie, I'll probably put things on and off several more times as its so easy to do it now - many more times than I have done in the past so I do think this will be a much better end product than what I have been able to do in the past.

Time for another update - while things are not moving 'fast', they are at least moving on this.

I've put the tub back on the frame. Targets for this 'phase':
    • Front crossmember move
      • Fit the steering box
      • Change the damn Grill mount
    • Fit the fan to the 231
    • Mount the radiator (got a new one - more later)
    • Steering shaft fit
      • Line out the bottom hole
      • Line out the fit and mount on the dash
    • Rear Tub mounts
    • Floor Pans
      • Clearance around the tranny and shifters
      • Final Floor Pans - mounts and what's moveable
I started to 'fit up' the new cross member. Due to wanting it to fit across the whole section, and having the other boxing done, I chose to refine things from each end and 'hinge' the cross piece after a cut about center.
I'll be adding fish plates to the front and back for strength. Most of the force is in twist and side crush, so it should be fine.

I notched out and sleeved the pass through for the steering box.

While fitting the centerline and height at the beginning, I tacked a small piece of channel to lock the position for the grill (side and height with the normal body puck). Then tapped a piece of square stock that slides in place so I just have to drop the bolt from the top through the grill to bolt it on.

Much will depend on the 'Covid' stuff - I 'should' have time and I'm not scheduled for any medical BS this year.... I've got 2 others to 'choose from' if I do go. It would probably be the Red '51.

Besides - if I get this one done this spring/summer, it may be sold by then :)

The trick is to have other projects and jeeps to take the sting out. I like to build them for folks as well. Last one I sold outside the family went to an older couple who had just retired. He couldn't physically do a full build, but could do the maintenance. They had a flatty when they were first married and wanted to go back to some of the places they used to.

Got a picture of them on Black Bear in a letter - they wanted to show me they were back to 'seeing Colorado' - that was a good 20 years ago now :)

Bring in a stray and rehabilitate so that it is safe to go to new home. It’s like a “no kill shelter” for old iron.

Well - technically *******'s across the street wasn't done before I sold it to him, and he wasn't on the earlycj5 forum yet... I did that one after he bought it from me.

It's kinda like "Group Therapy for the Jeep Dysfunctional Family"... We talk about it and work through our issues... not sure anyone here is looking for a cure though.

Today's update - Mounting the Radiator

I like to have my radiators mounted to the frame. Keeping them on the same platform as the engine and drive train. If it's mounted on the grill, the body flex can get the radiator into the fan. I also like to be able to remove the radiator mount so its easier to pull the drive train out the front.

Also - on this build, since it's a 231 motor, the water pump is longer. Its also the position most folks have to push the fan with a spacer out to for an HEI ignition. Neighbor ******* is doing this right now too.

In the end - I replaced the cross member so I can set things the way I like them and allow room to sink the radiator for full flow using the mechanical fan.

Got a nice 'finger width between the stock fan setup and the cardboard I have protecting the radiator. This spacing has always had a good flow for me in the past.

Clearance for the Saginaw Shaft and Knuckle. Used a bump out for the mount to keep it clean.

Getting the tins back on to check spacing. Got some trimming to do and fitting for the front side to get the grill air flow right.

Overall - liking the way it's coming together.

    Hello,
I just read through your whole thread and wanted to say thanks for sharing. I’m in the middle of a body project on my 1970 renegade and I need the trans tunnel piece as mine was rusted. It looks like you made a custom one and I was wondering if you wanted to part with the old one?
Pm me if you are interested.
    Thanks
    Sean
