Inline Vs In Tank Electric Fuel Pumps

    I have installed a 4.3 Chevy in place of my Buick 225. It requires at least 50PSI to run at all. In order to use the stock in tank chevy fuel pump, it will require some modifications to the 1975 ,or so, fuel tank I have rear mounted. I would rather keep the stock tank an off the shelf item and not modify it or fabricate a new one.

    To expedite this process, I am thinking an in line pump may make this quicker an easier.

    What are your ideas about this? Are there in tank aftermarket pumps that can push this much fuel with a smaller size? Do the inline pumps function as well?

    The whole system is going to have steel lines from the back of the engine to the tank..I would like to just flare them and not go AN fittings for economy sake.

    For that FI system I would build an intank pump setup using a Walbro pump that makes appropriate pressure.

    Look at an XJ / MJ fuel pump sending unit.
    I adapted one to fit the 72-75 style tank once.
    I’ll see if I have any pictures floating around.

    The only Walbro pump for this engine is the one I already have. Its very large and would require a lit to make it work with a stock jeep tank. Not impossible, but some degree of work.

    Universal In-tank Fuel Pumps

    All you have to do is chop your old fuel pickup tube off. Connect this pump with submersible hose at the appropriate depth. Only thing I haven't sourced yet is the bulkhead fitting for the wiring.

    Im not sure the Holley system would work.. Im pretty sure the novak one would. 319 bucks seems steep. I may have to take apart the stock one I have and see if I can retrofit it to fit my tank..I am not concerned about running a return line. Tub is off. easy..

    I like this idea. 255LPH is what i need. It does not list if its the standard 58PSI that i need as well.

    I have an inline mounted under the hood, (I have a reservoir tank under hood)
    VERY loud.:n: I don't like it and may consider in tank.

    I was going to go this route for my carbed 5.3 in the jeep but decided on an in-line due to less needed pressure and ease of replacement. My 74 tank measured deep enough to make it an easy task. In-Tank Fuel Pump Module - PA-Series

    Hey man, Thanks! I bet I can make that and retrofit that astro or a walbro pump into my tank. I must have over 50 psi and 255LPH flow. That pic is perfect.

    I have been using a Walbro in-line pump in my 3B for 12 years or so to supply the Pro-Flo 2 EFI. I mounted it even with the bottom of the frame rail (with a skid plate) immediately after it went horizontal. As low as I could get it and not be overly exposed. It still has to suck from near the top of the tank which is 14" deep (I didn't want a bottom outlet exposure either). During that 12 years, it never had a single problem. The the fuel pressure was set at 45 psi. It is going to get replaced with a higher pressure Walbro version for the Pro-Flo 4 now going in. I have the numbers for both those pumps if needed.

    Bottom line is yes, the in-line pump will work. However, I do think the in-tank is the better arrangement.
