    Quite right.

Although the "lift and tip" technique is one way to get out of a mudhole, not only woodpiles!

I have a 60" High-Lift and those can get sketchy fast. The wide add-on base for the jack helps with stabilization. On my Nissan I built in rectangular tube "slots" into the front and rear bumpers to accept the lift tang on the jack to help ensure that it would not be able to slip off.

Who remembers using a bumper jack? As an 8 or 9 year old (1962 0r 63) I remeber being in the back seat when my dad made a very sudden U turn and went screeching up to a parked car with a bunch of men around it. Turns out some one was working on a car parked at the curb. He had it jacked up with a bumber jack and was working under it. As my parents were driving past the car it came down on the man working under it. I have never trusted bumper jacks and a high lift just reminds me of them too much.

The rafters in my garage do a really good job of holding my highlift up for me. I rarely take it in the Jeep anywhere. It takes up a ton of space and I've found a standard scissor type jack to be much more useful, you can get decent lift ones out of full size pickups in the junk yard. Harbor Freight carries a decent one as well.

As for Jack Stands. I won't work under anything without them. If I'm not going tobe under it and just swapping a tire or something I'll just used my floor jack and make it quick.

i've been told to ALWAYS use jackstands when a vehicle is jacked up, if possible. depending on the vehicle (obviously this doesnt work on high clearance vehicles) you can put the tires under the rocker panels in case it falls.

Bumping this since i had three stands collapse under my Expedition, I found wal-mart online had a good deal on 6 ton jack stands, 45.54+tax w/ free shipping
I bought a set and they arrived in a once damp box and are double locking (2nd crosspin above ratchet)

When using stands on the rear of the vehicle you always need to chock the front tires so the vehicle cannot roll. It looks like it rolled forward.

It did, I had a chock catty corner but failed to push it tight. Also turns out 4x4 isn't the same as an old jeep... it doesn't stay in 4.

There’s a scrap yard/U-pull I get to on occasion that has some jackstands I keep looking at, but just can’t justify buying. They stand about 36” or 40” tall without the extensions, and are very heavy duty. I think the top ring is at least 3/8“, if not 1/2” thick. They’re $40 each and look to be unused. I’m considering them to use under my lift in tandem for things like rear axles, or individually with a threaded scaffold leveler for supporting transmissions, etc.

If they were here - I'd get them in a second. I need a set like that to use under my lift. Got used to the ones my Uncle had, but my cousin took them as he now has a place to work on things.

I may buy the steel and build ones, cause you sure can't find ones like that for $40 I'm aware of (if they are what I've pictured in my head).

I’ll report back in a few days. I have to head up to West Palm for meetings on Tuesday. I’ll be visiting that scrap yard probably Wednesday because they have an M38a-1 that I need some parts from. I have been trying to justify picking up those stands.

I did pick up the tall jackstands yesterday. They are Sunex HD 1410, and are unused, still partially wrapped in bubble-wrap, just the red powdercoat is faded to pink-ish. They’re “rated” at 10 tons.
I’ll probably fabricate some taller extensions for using with the lift. Its also nice that they stack/nest together for storage.
