I decided the Polaris could be a quick chop saw table not wanting to clean a bunch of sawdust in the house. Worked great:

Good idea... They use also quads here for farming, they are on sale at our local pro shop, with tractors and combine!
But.. it is not a toy!
A young guy died recently, playing with a quad.
And I learned recently that a guy who was at school with me, 73, died from the consequences of a quad accident.
He was a rich guy, he bought a toy but it was not a toy.
I know that Jeeps like CJ5 can make roll-over easily, and I avoid driving on places where the gravity center could be in question.
I see sometimes people on the roads on quads, with helmet...
I practiced motorcycle, having of course an helmet, I can say that I prefer not to wear an helmet...
That"s why my CJ 5 really the best toy we can have...
But quads for farming are good idea, my neighbor uses one, he sprays small pills on his large field at high speed, which would be impossible with other machines.

Two and a half years later, I've finally gotten around to fixing the old 2-stroke Polaris. It seized up in October 2020, got shoved into a corner of the shop, and got replace by the new quad. It was taking up too much space in the shop as a non functional vehicle, so about a month ago I un-buried it and started tearing it apart.

What an annoying thing to work on. You can tell in the factory they start buy putting the engine in the frame and them build the rest of the quad around it. There are also dumb things like needing to take the front rack support off to remove the front body but it's mounted behind the winch, bumper and front end assembly. I just bent it up out of the way.

You also can't get the front body off without removing the entire instrument cluster and handle bars. I said screw it and cut the body instead. It's just an old beater anyway:

There are also philips, torx, slotted, metric, and US fasteners. All the tools!

It had a carb float valve go bad just before it seized up and I was guessing it was related to that. I was thinking it washed the oil out of the motor and seized the piston. To my surprise, it broke one of the piston skirts. The shrapnel got wedged between the crankshaft and crankcase locking things up:

Apparently it's not too uncommon on these. When it gets worn and the piston starts slapping in the bore it eventually has a fatigue failure. Luckily ours died at idle. Apparently it's not uncommon to crack the crankcase when piston pieces get wedged in at speed.

I managed to get it turning with some leverage and then used brake cleaner and the air gun to clean out the crankcase until it was turning freely and nothing else was coming out. The bearings felt good so I ordered a top end kit with a Wiseco piston.

    Post pressure washing:

After 2 1/2 years, it lives! Quick test ride before putting the body work back on:

And body work back on. It's running great. It will be nice to have two quads when it comes to weed spraying and watering trees in the summer:

In comparison to the new quad, the light weight old 2-sroke is much more responsive, tossable, and fun to ride, but the fully independent suspension on the new quad has a WAY better ride.
