Back to the roll cage, time to bolt it in. As I said earlier, I'm not going to tie this to the frame at this point. But a little more shear strength can be had with bolts though the side of the body, as well as backing up the fenderwell. These spacers were on the original hoop in the little space between the body side and roll bar angle.
I made these backing plates for under the fenderwell.
And new hardware through the body side, through the spacer to support the angle vertically.
In the front, I am going to support the cage through the floor with the rocker guards that wrap under the body, and will also give some vertical shear support. These rockers were bent up by my brother back when he was building his (now retired) '68 CJ5. They are made from .125" flat plate, and have a simple design. Thanks Sam.
I think they will look good, probably black.
I played around with a bevel for the ends of the extended area, I will box this in. It works out pretty well for the front cage feet bolts to go through the floor then through the rockers. Not sure what to do about the bolt heads hanging down there, but it's actually kind of hard to picture a rock grinding through that area, I don't know, maybe try to recess them?

Will you round the corners on these to match the other plates?

Yes, sorry, just moving along kind of quickly, and I don't always get all the photos.

With the cage mostly bolted down, I want to turn the jeep around for the next phase of work. So why not go for a test drive? I take it for a rip around the block, rejoicing at the sound of no lifters ticking, I really enjoyed it. And I really got the itch to get it done, and drive it more. I parked on the snow bank to see how it will flex. And, I admit it, I wanted to admire my work out in the sun for a minute.
In 2 wheel drive because I don't have the front drive shaft yet. What, you guys don't wheel in the front yard?
I really need a higher ramp to get the final flex, but I marked where I think the rear arch cut will be.
OK last one. Then I backed it in so I can work on the passenger side easier, and pull the grill to get out for paint this week.

Yes! In the sunlight and looking good!

Hey I have a spare OEM sun-weathered V6 emblem I'd be glad to donate to you if you need one for the LH side. One post in the back is missing it's tip but it could easily be tapped for a threaded nut. Got it at the Jeep yard in Antelope several years ago.

Thanks, I have a new pair with the studs that stick out the back. The ones on there just have double side tape and one fell off. Sam fixed me up, and it's on my to-do list.

I want to get the rocker guards going, and the first thing is to finish off the ends for a cleaner look.
I think this will look fine.
Next is the rear, and I want to open up the wheel arch a hair for the 37's.
I ended up taking about 1/2" off the very bottom of the arch, then the end piece is straight, rather than curved. It will give a little rub surface in case the tire does contact it.
Spaced out 6 bolts evenly across the top, drilled, painted the guard, lined the inside with 20 mil wrapping tape, and set it up there. I will get some nice stainless cap screws this week to make it look pretty.
The rear view. I think it looks pretty good.
It kind of makes the jeep look not so naked. It's getting there. Oh, and as you can see, the grill is out getting painted this week.

I really hate when you see some vendor that has something you could use, but it has their logo laser cut in it. Besides, it's more fun to say you made them yourself.

You said your brother bent those up... does he have the ability/interest in building up another set for sale?

Your jeep looks so good, I love that blue!

Thanks. Sierra Blue seems to be pretty popular, it has always gotten compliments. I will ask Sam if he is interested in doing more rockers.

I love how they match the fender body line. I might be interested in a set too.

Well, one thing leads to another. I was going to install the tail lights, then realized I need to rehabilitate this area a little. Once I removed the old Kayline rack mounts off the corners, there are a bunch of holes, some of which I could fill now. Since I am limited for time, I am going to draw the line at the seam, that's as far as I am going to go for now, so i quickly welded up several holes.
Added a skim coat of filler and sanded.
    Some high build primer-surfacer..
A little more touch up and I can get the color on. Waiting for paint to dry, I received this from a buddy in the MV club. The beginning of the planning for the tire/can rack, which has bubbled to the top of the list of priorities.

The Military Gas Can Holder. Those are really strong. I mounted two cans off of mine. It even made it a crossed the Rubicon.

I really need 2 cans to be safe. I can make it from my house in South Lake Tahoe, all the way through west to east, and home on a 10 gallon tank and 1 extra can. But if I backtrack, winch or weld, I'm in trouble.

5 gal of gas used to be $20 plus a few cold beers in camp....... with the way things are going..... gas on the trail will cost you $20 a gallon plus a few cold beers and a titty flash this summer!
Better have two 5 gal cans on the back!
