So I ripped into the engine a little bit more today. Here’s the debris from the oil pan.

There’s the valve. What is the wavy part?

From the bottom of the engine up to the bottom of the piston.

The chances of no cylinder wall damage are pretty slim with that carnage.

The cylinder wall can be sleeved if needed to repair it, but not in a campsite. I hope you will park your jeep and ride along with the other fellas. You can ride with different folks every day then report back here with daily reviews and pictures, videos.

As long as I can shove an old piston in there and it runs for a week of Colorado wheeling it’s perfect!

Hmm yeah not very pretty. Your running on 5 now. If you pulled the rod and piston, the pushrods, snake a valve in with keepers, pulled the plug wire it may carry on. The cylinder would be dead and it wont draft with valves shut. The unknown is how the rod adjacent will behave on the shared journal alone.

    Ouch, sorry to see that!

How far away from the trailer are you willing to break down again?

Anyone near you have a dingle ball hone?
The damage is already done. If you can get parts I’d stick it together and run it!

We did that with an old bus/camper conversion once. A flat head straight 6. busted a piston so we pulled the oil pan, removed the rod and piston pieces. Took a piece of leather from an old boot and wrapped the crank throw with it and a hose clamp to hold it so it would hold oil pressure. put the pan back on, strained the oil thru a coffee pot strainer and some t- shirt cloth,(the only oil we had). Drove it almost 200 miles home on the remaining 5 cylinders. But it only had one rod per crank throw. Might not work so well with two rods per throw. Good luck. Jim

Put a Quality hose clamp or split collar around the old rod bearings and run on 5.

    I'm confused.
You have a serious mechanical breakdown that is going to need major surgery.
You option is to either risk utter destruction as far from the trailer as possible by doing a trail side half assed repair that should be reserved for an emergency recovery,
or attempt to save what you have and ride with friends.
    Answer seems clear to me................

Best bet is to put it back together with whatever is left, change the oil, new oil filter, and hope for the best.

The engine is full of metal and the oil carries it throughout the engine so expect a full rebuild or replacement.

The engine already needs a full rebore and rebuild.
I don’t see the problem with smoothing out any rough spots in the cylinder and dropping a piston in it. Slap a new head on it and change the oil/filter a couple times after the first few heat cycles to get the metal flushed out. He will need to make sure he has decent oil pressure.
A whole lot crazier things have been going on in the backwoods and farms for years.

Likely a rebuild candidate when the head gasket puked earlier this summer.
Remember the Wright Brothers patched a block with tin and rivets then went on flying.

Big thing is getting the bad piston, rod, and other noise makers out. It's gonna shake like no other if he does run it without the piston and rod. That alone will take out the main bearings in a few days.
