Hi there. I have a rebuilt 225 V6 that I’m getting ready to start for the first time. I was hoping to get some tips on the break-in process, what oil I should break it in with, and what oil should I run long term in it. Any info will help. Thanks

I like Lucas 30wt break in oil. Prime and make sure you have pressure on the gauge and to the top of the rockers before starting.
After break in run whats appropriate for your climate / temperatures. I use diesel oil ( by default) because it has the additives for our older engines and I have lots around with 3 other diesels on the property. Conventional oils with an additive is appropriate too.

When I got mine back from the rebuilder, he sent me with these directions, maybe they will be helpful for you?

I just got mine back from the machine shop and was told to use Lucas break-in oil (I think that's what I got) with zinc additive. New oils don't have the zinc that the old motors benefit from. He also said to make sure it was full of coolant, fill it until it comes out of the heater port on the top of the head. And ABSOLUTELY don't let it idle....keep the RPM around 2,000 to make sure the cam spins at a high enough speed. What I didn't ask was how long to keep the RPMs up.

After the break in I always run Valvoline VR1 racing oil. It has added zinc.

Thanks for the info Colojeepguy! So... it sounds like I should be using oil with Zinc like VR1 for older motors...correct?
