I've wanted to pick up an m100 for a long time prices were just crazy and my knowledge of restoration is still very minor, but I come to this site and drool. But I wanted to find a small trailer for my Jeep. Came across this yesterday and picked it up, over all its solid, needs some TLC, new tires, bearings and getting the lights up to snuff. Very small mount of rust but appears that its only on two posts holding the railing up so that should be easy and the railing is solid.

I searched and searched, scanned this group for similar trailers but I've come up empty. What I've found is some text welded to the tongue of the trailer; American-LOX7 and 01-XAA. Behind the tire I found and old registration that says its a 1967 AME - which goes along with the welded text. The VIN on the paperwork doesn't match the 01-XAA though. I will be going to the DMV to get it sorted out on Monday.

Here are the pics, I'd welcome any thoughts on the history of this thing if anyone knows.

Wow flashback. I remember we had that same trailer growing up. Sorry I don't remember the name, that was about 50 years ago.
    Nice looking trailer.

Had to rewire it, need to take it in to the State Patrol to get it inspected since the previous owner didn't register it -which I knew. Hopefully it will pass and I'll be good to go if not need to work with previous owner. Whoever wired it up before sucked, so I just gutted and started over. Bought cheap replacement lights, down the road I want LED but for now these will work.

The bottom need some TLC too, so I'll need to flip it up to be able to work on it.

Finally was able to get an appointment with the WA State Patrol for a "ownership in doubt" inspection. VIN was easy to ID and whole thing took only about 10 minutes, the paperwork took longer actually. He see's a lot of trailers and told me for a 1967 it was in great shape. Now that its behind me and I have plates I am going to be stripping it down to get rid of the rust.

The two mid pillars on the trailer that hold up the raised bar have significant rust, though they are still solid and strong. My thought is to sand, the outside portions of those pillar then hit with Rust-Oleum or something else on the inside as best I can. Then I'll cut some steel plates that match the angles and then and weld those in place. Somebody had mention using something like Spray Foam to keep moisture out, but I can't see it holding up to any heat from welding. Am I over thinking this?

Thanks Ron - actually mentioning U-Haul led me to a bunch of old trailer pictures - none like this but pretty close.

Trailer got a lot of use this weekend, it's so small its hard to see behind me.

    This.

Fella told me once that U-Haul deliberately de-rated their suspensions, and put the fenders too close to the tires, so people wouldn't overload the trailers.

The foam can trap moisture inside itself, I've used it on the inside of a cracked plastic panel where moisture isn't a concern and the contour was irregular, it won't like welding at all, smoke and soot everywhere where you are trying to weld.

    I wouldn't foam it.

Thanks, good point. Going to be taking it to my regular tire shop and ask them to check things out. I'd love to replace the axle and get some matching Jeep wheels but I don't want to put to much into it and not get the value out.

Thanks you confirmed my gut feeling. I think I'm going to cut some steel pieces and have a friend help me weld them in place. Everything feels very sold but fear if I don't reinfoce it and deal with the rust it will only be a matter of time. I've got a tarp over it now to protect those pieces.
