Yeah I know about them. I really prefer drums they work fine and last forever. Our weather and salt kill discs in no time. I got the front end all torn apart now. I think all the brake parts are actually good an reuseable except for the hoses and lines. The king pin bearings are shot and the knuckle seals. I dont think im even going to do the knuckle stud mod just going with stock size tires and wheels they are all tight and good.

I had an extreme battle with the front driveshaft. The slip yoke was stuck hard. I chained it to the high lift jack to pull it apart. Had to heat it red it still wouldnt budge. I also sledge hammered it on a railroad troack to shock it. Lots of grease on fire. The chain broke. I figured id soak it on something maybe even muratic acid. So I quenched it in water to cool it down. Took it to the bench to evaluate. And It was loose and moved my hand! So I have a question. There is a hole in the end by the u joint. Is that supposed to have a rubber plug or felt behind it to hold in the grease? It seems it would let the grease out before going into the splines

I've never seen any sort of felt or plug in all my years looking at builds and such. It's gotta breath quick to keep with the suspension.

I think most slip joints do have that breather hole. You would think if your axle was submerged in water and the drive shaft/slip joint expanded from suspension flex it would suck in water and dirt into your slip joint. When we would grease the slip joint during servicing we would hold a pry bar with a piece of bicycle inner tube over it next to the u-joint and pry it a little to block the breather hole, then grease it forcing grease by the slip joint splines instead of out the breather hole.

Good idea. I have two i looked at and they both had just a hole. Today i took the back hubs off. They had grease on the taper and the nuts were just snug so they came right off almost didnt need the puller. I guess they wanted it easy to service lol Brakes look pretty good it wont take much to clean them up. Rear driveshaft needs u joints but atleast the yoke is free. Im going to pull out the trans/t-case so i can clean and paint everything easier. Theres nothing but 3 bolts left holding it in anyway.

I took out the trans and discovered the crossmember is loose so good thing i did that. I started painting sections of the frame working my way around cleaning up small sections at a time. I worked on a cab corner a bit today. Iv been saving this football shaped barbecue lid for about ten years thinking I would use it for this someday and it works ok. Its not the most perfect fit the bottom needs more work but it will turn out nice. Hopefully there is enough left of the front corners to patch because i only have enough for two

My friend knows of one in better shape he keeps teasing me but I guess they dont want to sell it just yet. Thats ok. If I dont work on this i will just be working on something else. Im enjoying it sofar. I think im going to take the roof off or atleast try. There isnt much holding in down around the rain gutter anyway. It will be alot easier to work with to put new edges on it.

I cleaned up the trans some more and the news isnt good it will need a rebuild. The cluster gear has a few inches of teeth just about rusted away. Probably for the better because i was questioning the bearings anyway. Then i spent the afternoon rebuilding the knuckle on my cj5. I started off replacing the felt seal but ended up removing it and cleaning out the junk. The bearings look good the preload was quite tight so i shimmed it out a bit. Put new 00 grease in it. Very messy job.

Congrats. There's a guy in one of the Facebook groups that pops up now and again that has been making various body panels and floorboards. Might be a good resource if you can find him.

Were also working on cleaning up the scrap in my neighbors woods he had an old trailer that i drug out and fixed up Im going back for a big seeder and a absoluetly destroyed studebaker champion. I think its a 62 or 63. Its going to come out in pieces.

Got the woods cleaned out it was a 53 champion not 63. We just hooked a chain to the various parts and ripped it to pieces quite easily. Also got a few small trailers and a fertilizer spreader. I saved the tie rods off it I think i can use atleast one for the fc. Google said the rear end was a dana 44 19 spline 3:56 so i saved it but i think thats wrong it says 23 on it not 44. It was fun anyway. I got a bunch of parts today from Walcks so it should take care of the tranny, engine, and brakes. Iv got the front brakes all put back together and front axle is basicly done. The whole front half of the frame and axle is painted. Now im working on piecing together the tie rods. Id like to get some more done on the bed so that might be tomorrow.

I made some good progress on the bed. Got the rusty side cut out and ready for new metal. I kinda have limited time to work on it out in the driveway when its not too hot and not rainy and I make a ton of noise so I try to do it when nobody is around. Also got one wheel painted and put on. Will have to do tires when im farther along of course. Still need to clean up and paint the pumpkin area. Also have to clean it out and reseal the cover. I have a new gasket but probably use "the right stuff" so I dont have to deal with a leak. Working on the tie rods I think I need to shorten and retap one but its a weird size 3/4-18 thread probably need to order a tap for that.

I ended up rebuilding the whole passenger side it was just too far gone to save. I thought it would be hard to do but its going quite well. I saved the stake pockets to put back on and got rid of the rest. The spare wheel tub is useable so that saves me some work. Im just piecing it together from scraps thats why It only goes half way. Still got to build the other half and put the edge pipe on it. Then iv got to replace about 4" of the bottom on the front panel. There isnt much left that is original on this bed maybe 25 percent but will look original except for the wood floor so im quite happy with it.

Making good progress i got the bed side done and the engine trans painted . I got the engine put back in the frame and putting pieces back on it. Got the distributor in. I had an extra one that looked a bit better than the original one so ill use that. Still have to clean up the bellhousing and clutch parts and the t-case then i can put them back on. Also got one side of the rear brakes done. Still have to clean up and paint a few more spots on the frame and back axle. Also got the tie rod situation sorted out. I ordered a few different taps to make the tie rods i have work and it wasnt going well. I ended up welding two together which i was trying to avoid but it worked out good and its plenty strong with a threaded plug inside.
