So I understand what the smaller when accomplishes closer to the windshield but what purpose does the taller loop serve closer to the grille?

My windshield doesn't come close to the one closest to the grille. I do have the flat ones with welting on them attached to the windshield frame that rest on the hood and protect the wipers.

You talking about the one that latches to the windshield hook, when the hood is raised?

Back in my military days that's what we tie down the whip antenna to while moving, I wouldn't expect to see it on a later production CJ.

Yeah I'm not sure how old this hood actually is. It has the snorkel filler panel installed.

On the older hoods with the flat top windshield the Tall front loop is to latch the hood to the windshield when up. Presumably to keep the Jeep from eating you on a windy day. The lower rear loop is to secure the windshield when down:

The later curved top windshields that showed up in late '69 or '70 have a different layout. The low hoop is still in the same place to strap the windshield to the hood, but there are now two tall loops further back to support the windshield when it's down (there are no padded stand-offs on the windshield itself):

A prop rod was added to the hood to keep it up when open.

Thanks! I'll have to do some rechecking and I'll post some pics. Ive got the padded loops on the frame, the original strap on the frame also and A hood with the two sets of holes but no hoops. Didn't realize there was that much variation.

Yep......There is. :) I think that the old gaurds, that went around the wiper motors ( I recall ) , would be pretty cool on any CJ5 . Any one know where I could find a Set ?

There is no place to mount them on the curve top windshield frames though. That's why Jeep switched to the tall footman loops on the hood for the newer windshields.

Be aware if you have bottom mount wipers and arched top glass there isn’t enough room to put the windshield rests where they need to be to rest properly on the hood.

Edit: Looks like Fireball beat me to it.

Forgive the ignorance, is the tall footman for latching the hood up a hardware store piece, or should I post a wtb? Not seeing the old style for sale but haven’t perused them local ace either.

You might find you could adapt a hardware store item, but it would not be the same as OEM.

I had looked at that but dimensions were never mentioned. As long as the spacing is correct it’s close enough for me, thanks

I took the risk and tried them. It worked for my '69 until I found a weathered original that matched the condition of the Jeep.
