New to the forum. Thanks for excepting me. I just bought a 69 Jeepster Commando. 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive work. When I put it in 4 wheel low, it stays in high gear. The shift is physically in the low position. Still is high gear. Wondering if it may be a shifting linkage problem or should I take the bottom plate off? Thanks for any help. Dick

It's got to be in the linkage or a broken shift fork. I'ld put my phone down in sight of the shift rods and start a video then go through the gears. If the rods move freely you have a fork issue internal to the transfercase. pull the pan off the bottom and place phone where it can see the sliding gear, fork, and rod start a video and go through the gears again.

The old u shift linkage on these things is terrible. Mine will be getting a twin stick.

The original J-shifter was not a very good design. There are two shift rods that it controls. Sounds like only one is working.
