One of the reasons I rewired the my CJ5 is because the wiring worked ok but was a bit sketchy. One problem was the starter would not disengage after the engine started. A blip on the gas and it finally turns loose. After rewiring there is no change.
Experience on other units led me to replace the solenoid in case it was not releasing. New solenoid didn't fix it.
Then I went after the ignition switch which was not original but didn't look that old. New ignition switch didn't fix it.
So is there a way to lube up the starter to release or am I looking at replacing the starter? It has been removed and replaced and I don't see anything unusual.
Should I try a couple of washers to space it away from the flywheel?
I'm looking to fix it if I can and if not, then weigh my options on a new starter or Toyota starter conversion.
And I did try a search but was not successful in locating a solution.

    Thanks.

Maybe try a new Bendix, or clean and lube the old one.

As per Pete, the Bendix is probably just dirty. But while you have the starter out, take a good look at the starter pinion teeth and the ring gear. If those are chewed up, they can also cause it to stick.

If it cranks after key release look to the solenoid. If it starts and drags the starter look to the bendix

I read online to clean the bendix with WD40 and then lube with silicone.
That seemed to have fixed it. Thanks all.
