    long story short
truck has been acting up . 88 ranger . check engine light on and off
just couldn't read/count the blinking light with jumper wire to plug
little internet search . turned up this tool
no more blinking light . it gives you a trouble code number
well worth the 36 dollars . pin pointed the sensor that was bad

    I feel your pain.
I had an 86 Ford Ranger and it took me multiple times triggering an then counting the blinky light to determine the fault. Seems like it would be easy but I lost count multiple times, finally determine it was the crankshaft position sensor. That tool would have been a godsend.

Code readers help you to not just throw parts on. They’re not expensive and one of the first things I bought (OBDII) for my older Ford F150.

I didn't know these OBD1 code readers were so cheap. Just ordered one to look at the intermittent check engine light on our 1989 F-250.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

Yup, reading blink codes is for the birds, if you've got an OBD-I Ford.

I bought an adapter for my snap on scanner. Issue I've run into is the stupid diag connector in the engine bay is usually corroded up.
