I have been trying to sell both of my race cars for the last 6 months or so. Several people have looked at them, but no one has bit........
Talking with my engine builder last week, he convinced me that a car fresh off the race track will be easier to sell than one that has been sitting in a trailer for 8-ish years.....
Knowing that I'll be a bit rusty, I figured I should attend the first race of the season this Saturday, May 6. All of the other competitors should be a bit rusty after sitting all off season as well, hopefully we will have a good showing. The track is my home track in Anderson, Ca; where I have won many feature events and several track championships in various divisions.
I will be the only "home town" driver in the traveling series when it visits.
With a little luck I hope to get both cars sold and back to Jeep/AMX upgrades!
This car class is called a Modified.
    Basic specs:
    2500 lbs with driver
383 Chevy, billet crank, billet rods, full roller billet cam, Brodix aluminum heads, belt driven timing set.
13.5:1 compression on 110 octane leaded fuel, max rpm 8,500.......650 hp.
15x8 wheels, 9" ford full float spool. Brinn type transmission.

Very cool. I occasionally watch modified racing on mav tv. Out of curiosity, what is the asking price for something like that?

These are Lucas oil Cars, just like on Mav TV.
I'll be racing in the North State Modified Series, which crosses over with Lucas Oil Modified Series.
I'm asking $17k for this car, turn key with spare parts, wheels, ect......
Cost to build new was $60K......
The backup car is a little older but engine is new $10K turn key with spares.......
    $25K for the whole package!

I used to be a pit crew wrencher at an eastern Carolina dirt track (Dixieland just outside Elizebeth City) for a couple Hatteras Island guys back in the ‘80’s in Street Stock. I even got to drive a short “mechanics race” after the feature once. I even finished without wrecking the car, a ‘72 Camero.

    Scale day yesterday.
Scaling involves adding ballast to simulate driver weight, setting tire air pressure to simulate race conditions then adjusting the chassis to desired specs based off of scale weights/percentages.
    Disconnect shock absorbers.
Set air pressure, document tire diameters and L/R stagger.
    Unload any sway bar preload.
Set chassis ride height on all 4 corners to 4".
Observe cross weight percentages (RF-LR) and adjust chassis to meet desired cross weight.
Measure ride height on all 4 corners and verify that it is as close to 4" as possible with cross weight percentage maintained.
Measure and document trailing arm angles, adjust if not within desired spec.
Measure and document rear axle location in relationship to chassis, adjust if not within desired spec.
Measure and document track bar height and split between axle and chassis, adjust if not within desired spec.
Remove car from scales and place car on turn plates with rear blocked up.
Measure and document caster/camber on front, adjust if not within desired spec.
Measure and document toe adjustment, adjust if not within desired spec.

When I was in full swing this used to take about 1-1/2 hours start to finish. This time it took me over 4 hours......

Time to get the engine running.
First off we plug in the oil heater and let it warm up for about an hour.
With the oil nice and hot it was time to drain/replace as well as change the filter.
With fresh oil in the engine I let the oil heater heat the oil for another half hour.
I pulled the distributor and primed the engine with a priming tool and drill.
Reinstalled the distributor and pressurized the fuel cell to push fuel to the pump.

The engine fired after a a couple cranking sessions but the carburetor leaked from every gasket.
Out to the race trailer I went and returned with a carb gasket kit!
After a complete tear down and cleaning the carb went back together with fresh gaskets.
With the engine fired up I set the idle to 2500 and let the engine warm up. These engines are cold blooded and need the idle set high for a little bit before you can lower it back down.
There is no thermostat, just a water restrictor plate in the water neck, so about 10 minutes of high idle is needed before the water temp begins to move up.

The carb is set up with a "traction master" kit between the primaries and secondaries. A quick release pin holds "keys" in place that tune the speed at which the butterflies open for the primaries and secondaries. This is currently set up with the 60% key, the primaries open 60% before the secondaries open. Back in the day you would tweak the linkage on a 4bbl to play with the primary to secondary opening ratios...... The setup I have is a whole other level of tune ability. In tight racing traffic it acts like a 2bbl, very smooth and responsive, when traffic opens up or a hole shot is needed..... hang on.... were doing a drag strip launch, starting from 80mph base speed.

Just a little engine running video.
Small blip of the throttle, I don't like to rev the engine up unloaded unless we are setting timing. The 4,000-8,000 rpm while inside a building is an auditory altering experience, earplugs required!

Did you ever race with Jack? I can't recall his last name, he had an auction yard over by the airport. Seems to me I heard he may have passed away. We stopped by there a couple of years ago when we were through town.

    That motor sounds damn nice...

    Jack Epperson "The Racing Auctioneer"
We raced with his for years.......
Funny story.... I roughed him up one night..... Gave him the "3 taps.... then I move you" maneuver..... After I went on to win the race he gave me a strong hit from behind on the cool down lap......
Afterwards in tech.... (he finished 4th or 5th) all he said was "I have underware older than you and you need to remember that".....

That's funny. Epperson; how could I ever forget that last name? If you ran due west from his biz, a couple of streets past Airport Road, you'd have hit our place. I was a firefighter then and one time I responded to a plane that crashed just across the parking lot of Kent's Market.

Jack was big on his racing, and not exactly young. Was I correct in him having passed away? BTW, great food there at the swap meet if you ever happen to pick it up on the weekend. Surprisingly good! They have a cook shack there. I used to hit that swap meet most weekends when I was in town, and sat through a lot of auctions. Now that I recall, he still has a vintage baby grand piano that I dropped off for his auction when I moved away, and I never got paid for that!

    Damn. :drool;:bump::bump::bump:

Went to the track Saturday to practice in between scheduled divisions racing that night. No races were scheduled for my division that night.
The first couple laps were a bit hairy to say the least! Flat spotted 8 yr old tires from a 75 lap race in Eureka, Ca. The engine/carb took a few laps to clear out before it really ran like it should.
With my primary interest being in selling the car, I was pretty careful to not get close to the wall. After the first run I was a bit dizzy! Shasta Speedway is one of the larger asphalt tracks on the West Coast, I wish the straightaway was just a little longer to really open the engine up!
Now I can say the car is race ready!
Just add 2 sets of fresh tires @860 per set, 20 gal of fuel at $12 a gallon and pay the entry fees!.........o_O
I was offered a full time ride in an INEX Legend car, that was tempting!

I used to love races at redwood acres. My first time at the races there’s was a rough one though. The outlaws were in town. One got tangled with another and went airborne on the backside, went through the chain link fence and into the spectators on the pit side. One person died. Very sad thing to see.
Uncle Kenny was on Ray Rapp’s pit crew for many years and even raced the car a few times.
