Don't have many pictures right now, but bought what was left to a Tuxedo Park CJ-6 a few weeks back from Arizona, but kept in Colorado. I forgot to take pictures of the sheet metal when it came in, because I was in a big rush to get the tub over to the blasters and it never came out of the trailer. But the frame (for the most part) is done minus traction bar out back and body mounts. Switching out the wide track axles for narrow track 44's. Motor, 307 SBC is done except buying a fuel injection system for it. Exhaust is done, tranny (turbo 350 built by Rossller) is done, Dana 20 TC is done. So with a lot of work yet to come, but I feel I have crested the hill now with the new to me sheet metal, I'm hoping to get this rolling and in paint by end of August. Wishful I know, but thats the goal. I've had the frame, motor, tranny and TC done for a few years and was waiting to get the right metal. Now here we go. Oh and the tub next to the frame is the Jalopy. I didn't have enough to do, so I decided to try two projects at once. No the Jalopy will not be done this year, well unless I hit the lottery.

Nice. I saw that on FB in one of the groups. Looked like a good buy.

It will need a little work, but much better than the massive work on a rust belt beauty.

Which EFI system are you looking at? I've worked with both FiTech and Holley Sniper kits. The FiTech works, but the Holley provides much better tech support.

Did you manage to get all the Tux Park trim pieces?

Mike I have the hood emblems, chrome hood hinges, footman loops, grab handle. I'm sure there is more I'm missing, no rear chrome plate light. He has sense sent two boxes of parts and pieces, I know the headlight bezels were in one, front directionals. I'm really yet to go through all of it. I have three projects going right now, my 46 Jalopy, the six and my 70 cj5, which I just attempted to put disc brakes on yesterday, but after opening the two boxes (and yes, after I removed all the drum parts) found out I was missing brake lines and wheel studs. So that's up on stands. I do have one weird part that caught my attention though. I will have to post a picture of it. It's looks to be a curved grab handle. Maybe not related to the Tux.

Mike you said Fitech worked but Holley had better support. Which one worked the best on the engine? I know that's an open ended question, but other than stock efi, I have never installed an after market system.

They both work very well. You will see a lot of complaints about both systems. But they generally end up being either installation errors, underlying problems with the motor, or inadequate fuel systems. My FiTech system is the LS system on my CJ5, not a throttle body unit. But many of the problems are the same between the TBI and LS type systems. My Sniper kit is on the 351 Cleveland in my 64 F100. The Cleveland did run well before I converted it from carb to TBI.

Here are some of the common issues.

Inadequate fuel supply. The fuel system needs to be upgraded to provide 58 psi at the throttle body unit, including the pump and all the fuel lines. FiTech initially pushed their Fuel Command Center (FCC) which was an engine bay mounted sump system that was filled with the original low pressure pump, then an internal high pressure pump would push fuel from the sump to the TBI unit. These FCC systems had lots of issues. The best option is to install an in-tank fuel pump, similar to the one Novak sells. I used the Novak system but had the pump fail so I replaced it with a Walbro 255 lph pump and it's working well. External pumps also work, but they are noisy and don't last as long. I am using an in-tank pump on my CJ5 and an external pump on my F100.

Exhaust issues and vacuum leaks. Both systems are self learning with the aid of a wide band O2 sensor that must be installed as close to the engine as possible, usually immediately after the collector. Many old cars have some form of minor exhaust leak from loose bolts, to cracked manifolds, to poorly welded O2 sensor bungs. This allows outside air to enter the exhaust stream in front of the O2 sensor which causes a lean reading to the ECU so it richens the fuel mixture trying to compensate. It can be very frustrating to the installer trying to tune the system to run properly. Vacuum leaks cause similar issues by allowing unmetered air into the combustion process, so again the computer tries to compensate by adjusting the fuel mixture to reach the targeted Air-Fuel Ratio at the O2 sensor. The exhaust and vacuum systems must be tight.

RFI Issues. The ECU on both the Holley Sniper and the FiTech kits are housed within the TBI unit. Many older vehicles have poor wiring under the hood and use unshielded ignition wires and/or non-resistor spark plugs. These wiring issues can cause interference with the ECU that can be very hard to track down. The installer says the car ran fine before, so it must be a bad TBI unit. The fix is shielded plug wires, resistor spark plugs, and good wiring practices that route other wires as far from the TBI unit as possible.

Incorrect power wire hook up. The ECU needs a hot wire at both key-on and while cranking.

Timing issues. The FiTech and Sniper kits will control timing on the motor, depending on what type of distributor you are using. Lots of people fight to get this work. On my F100 I'm running an MSD Billet distributor and an MSD 6 ignition box. I locked the distributor out and set the initial timing at 16 degrees (if I remember correctly) then let the Sniper unit do the rest. It works great. But this process can become far more complicated depending on what equipment you are running. The easy answer is to leave the timing control to the original set up. But computerized timing control is one of the benefits to upgrading to these systems. Do your research on this part to decide how you want to approach it.

The Holly user interface on their handheld unit is much nicer then FiTech's. As is their general documentation and availability for Tech Support. I did have minor issues with both systems and they both took care of it under warranty even though both systems were past their warranty periods. The FiTech systems have really forced the other vendors to review their pricing strategies and driven down the costs to convert to EFI. And lots of professional shops are installing these units with happy customers.

I'm very happy that I converted to an EFI system and certainly recommend it to others.

    Hope this helps.

    Mike

I was following this same jeep on Facebook marketplace. How did you work the transport if I may ask?

A friend of mine lives in Delta Co. He is originally from around these parts and does his own Jeep parts/complete Jeep sales. Vintage stuff. He picked it up for me and brought it up to Mass. He goes by Boston Bob if you ever needed his services, let me know. He is a traveling fool and goes just about everywhere. He did it at a very reasonable price. I think more than a few people here know him.

The CJ6A tub has now been started officially. Replacing hat channels and the rear riser, not because of rust, but rather harsh treatment. There is a little rust on hat channels but I could have left them alone,. But we all know I cannot LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE. Rear riser is in, right hat channel is located and tacked, left should be in tomorrow from Classic. Paint, maybe in a few weeks. At least the tub. Going with some body armor from CCFabz. Tube fenders as well from them.

Oh and the hole in the floor was from over aggressive hat channel removal. I was pretty much fed up with drilling spot welds about then. :banghead:

Ok, so finally got the tub into epoxy primer today. Pretty cool out and seeing as I had to paint it out under the lean-to behind the barn it was good thing. No bugs out. Not that it matters too much, but I hate killing bugs. Hood got a shot of primer as well. Next will be the rock sliders, when I get more primer. Still have to get a roll cage kit to fab up, before paint and there are plenty of dings and dents to take care of. But at least now I can stop the flash rust and get into the body work. Any thoughts on who makes a descent roll cage kit ??

You're on your own with a CJ6. You may be able to buy a cage from a 5 and add to it, but IMHO it's better to start from scratch. Some aspects of the cage design will depend on how you intend to use the rig. On my 6 I didn't expect to do hardcore off roading so didn't want it to look like I had a collision with a jungle gym:

I did want all the seating to be rollcage attached, however, so while you can't see it in that photo there are side to side spreaders under all the seats. Then I mounted TJ seat belts front and rear.

I actually wanted the rollcage to go all the way back in the rear. The fabricator either forgot or thought he knew better - by moving the rear of the cage in board the softop bows would clear the rollcage as they came down. I didn't care about that - I would have put disconnects in the top bows to avoid that issue. The upside of how it came out is that the behind-seat storage was nicely accessible.

Very nice looking Jeep and WHITE at that. Gives me a real good idea what my 68 is going to look like in white. I like the looks of your cage. Kind of what I had in mind. Thanks for the inspiration.

The white wheels were on purpose. The exterior was a rattle-can job started by the previous owner and refreshed by me. The goal was a '69 Ford Mustang champagne gold. I got the interior all painted gold, but sold the Jeep before I ever got the exterior done.

The white over white was never my favorite...;)
