Update: Well pulled the tranny and TC to find the reason for bad first gear and reverse grinding. Found the pressure plate had bolts that backed out and loose. Then found that there were two flywheel bolts backed out. The PP was not releasing pressure from the clutch and explains the grinding. So I had a new Centerline PP and new clutch disc in inventory and installed those on a newer flywheel. Rebuilt the T-14 and its waiting to go back in. Ordered a new Tera Low transfer case from Herms and he said it was about 2-3 weeks out from being built. The smoke from California is effecting his operation up there and he has cut down on his hours. I also am having him do the tapered bearing conversion on it while he is building it. I figured for the little extra to have him build a complete transfer case with the tapered bearing conversion was well worth it. So I'll be rebuilding my case and putting it up for sale to help cover that cost. So plan has changed slightly to, installing the T-14 back in (seeing as I rebuilt it) and sticking with 373 gears for now. Long term plans are to do a complete frame off next year when my 66 Tux is done and then jump into this one. Next year, I have a T-15, I awaiting rebuild kit for and I am thinking of installing with the Herms T-case and regearing to one of the following axles gears, 427, 456 or 488. ( I have them here) Just don't want to have two frame off resto's going right now as I'm pressed for space. At that time I have a set of offset flanged 44's and three narrow track 30's that will be getting those gears for this. I also have a T-18 but was going into the Jalopy build (which is now on hold) and unless I find another one, will be designated for the Jalopy, but the T-15 would be a good choice for the six, behind the Dauntless. thinking I have a few weeks, so I'll drop this off the axles and start on the lift kit. Still don't have the wheels back from the blasters, so they are a few weeks away from mounting my tires one. Was almost at the point that I was going to pull this tub and just start a frame off, but then I'd have two that are not running and driving. Pulled the steering box to rebuild one of the two I have and ordered parts from Kaiser Willys to do that. Have the steering link off and clean and found broken springs inside, parts ordered. One real nice sector shaft, but bushings have some play. Also ordered bearings and seals for front bellcrank. So I think that's about it. Hope all the parts come in soon so I can have this back wheels down and running before the snow fly's so I can get back to the 66 six. I still have front locking hubs to clean out and front hubs and spindles to go through, so there is still plenty to do while I await parts.

I was rereading the beginning of your thread and it dawned on me that you may have purchased your CJ6 from the same guy that I bought my M170 from. There can't be too many people selling old Jeeps out of Vincennes, Indiana. Was he by chance a young guy that lived down a one lane gravel/dirt road that was a little outside town? He may still have had one M170 left. When I was there in April he was telling me he had bought a lot of 5 out of Iowa, sold 4 to pay for the lot and was keeping the remaining one for himself. Just curious.

    Here's my M170.

Well this thing has demons in it. Started removing the rear axle U bolts and shocks and found the rear frame where the spring hangers are is cracked in approximately the spots on each side. I'm guessing it's from the sideway stress those monster long shackles. Shackles that long slow a lot of rear side to side sway . So I'm sorry to say this, but seeing as I have this down this far, tranny, emergency brake, steering column, speedo cable, pedals, seats, floor pans, exhaust, rear axle, both drive shafts, etc, etc, I'm pulling the tub and fixing the frame properly. So, it's now getting frame off, full resto mod. I already picked out my Dana 30 front axle with disc's and flanged 44. And now also the T-15. So now no drivers, except the 83 Scrambler. But that's just my farm truck/tractor, snow plow, coup puller. Yes I pulled my chicken coup this afternoon. Hopefully the tub will be off this coming week and will be at blasters.

Yep that's the same guy. He still has one M170. And yes, the same skinny little driveway/road thingy. Nice kid.

Tub is coming off this weekend and will be at the blasters next Monday. Didn't want to , but only real way to fix the rear frame rails correctly.

Tub is off. Had to get help removing it today. Decided to put my T18 in it today. I am also installing the Dana 20 with Terra Low kits also going in. I had set them aside for my Jalopy build and they are ready to go, but will use them here now. Jalopy is a year away and now that I had to pull the tub for frame repair, I figured I might just as well pull the trigger on installing it in here. I'm also thinking about using my Scout 44 up front. What the heck, if it's getting a T18 and Terra Low, might as well shoot the wad.

With all the tougher stuff going in now, I'm naming this thing Brutus.

I'll shoot some new pics this week of the frame damage. Once the tub comes back I'll have the frame stripped down and going over.

So here are the cracks that I mentioned earlier. Plans for repair; sandblast, weld and then box in rear rails. Also plan to replace rear bumper and of course, the shackles when installing the new springs. 68 cj6 frame 2.jpg 68 cj6 frame 3.jpg 68 cj6 frame.jpg 68 cj6 frame 4.jpg

Probably will double up the area where the spring mount meets the frame with plate. I'll grind out the rivets and replace with grade 8 bolts and maybe a weld.

This is where the 66 Tux now resides. Built this a few weeks ago to keep my M-416 and the Tux out of the weather. Plus all the related sheet metal I've hoarded over the years.

    24X16 and not big enough.

Did a little metal work today, will finish it tomorrow and then if the rain holds out, into primer tomorrow afternoon. (tub anyways) Forgot to order intake and oil pan gaskets, so got to get that done. Found out that my recently bought and built Dauntless has a TA Performance timing cover and double roller and gear chain set. Oh and another golden nugget, it was been converted to Pertronix pointless under the cap. I was wondering how I was going to get my GM cap on with the York compressor and bracket. And now I'm going to run it. Yes, it also came with the York bolted to it. And as another golden nugget, it had a 360 intake and ceramic coated over the frame headers. When I pulled the pan off, I found a brand new set of pistons in it. Actually everything on it is new. Sometimes we get what someone advertises. Normally (like my last 3B) I get the BS part of the sale. Waiting to fix the frame on a rainy day. Got to keep going with the tub while the weather is holding. Did get the two fenders and hood in epoxy today.

I think instead of the white it came as, I might go with International white. Its a little cream color in it and I think I might like that better than the brighter white. What do you guys think about the color choice ?

Finished priming bottom today. Will flip and do a few things inside then prime that. Then I'll spray the bottom and weather permitting I'll paint the exterior.

Top is primed. Tub moved inside along with the frame. Frame repairs begin tomorrow and hopefully I can get the bottom of the tub into color this coming week, but temps do not appear to be good next week. I did repair the Warn M8000 thats going on it this week. Broken drum support on motor end replaced and gears cleaned and greased. Bought new synthetic rope for it and also an upgrade kit.

Again a good specialist! What a work! In fact, it is good to check all because, on a hand car, there are mysteries.
It took me 3 years to have mine repaired, using specialists. Here in some weeks all will be fixed. Congratulations.
The creamy white, nice. Maybe you can paints some details in an other matching color.

If you do cream it screams brown or tan.

I know, but I have light grey seats. That's way down the road, but I'm thinking on it.

Got the old back bumper off today to get after all the cracked frame. Hate removing rivets. But it's all off and the pieces that fell off are all chamfered and tacked back in. Not fully welding in yet. Made cardboard template and transfered that to some 1/8 by 5 inch plate. Cut one out and fitted. I'll get after the other one tomorrow. Pictures later.
