1973 Jeep 232 Dyno Results

    D8A16CF0-E3BB-44BE-B47C-715A7E06889B.JPG I had my 232 professionally rebuilt over the winter and thought I'd post the dyno results for those who might be interested. My goal was to keep the engine basically stock with minor improvements. I did plan on swapping out the crank and rods to convert it to a 258 but the 4.0 stroker crowd has made those parts hard to find at a reasonable price. The block was bored .030 over and pistons, bearings and camshaft were replaced. The block and heads were milled and compression ratio is now 9.5:1. Cam is a mild lunati RV cam with slightly more lift and near factory duration. Its worth noting that the water dyno wasnt capable of readings below 1400 rpm.

    Looks like you came up with a great combo of parts and machining for a Jeep engine all that bottom end torque is just the ticket.

    Thanks everyone. At some point I may change to electronic ignition and go to a 2 barrel carb or tbi, but only if reliability becomes an issue. So far the points ignition and carter yf havent been a problem since I rebuilt the carb and performed a basic tuneup on the distributor. This was a low mileage motor, 26k miles, in a jeep that sat for over 30 years. Engine overhaul wasnt necessary, but it did use oil and smoke slightly. Teardown revealed the cylinders were heavily glazed which resulted in a lot of ring wear. Current driving impressions support a lot of low rpm torque. Even with 3.73 gears and 31 inch tires it like 4th gear above 35 mph. Reminds me of the farm tractors I operated as a kid but I guess it is kind of a tractor motor!

    All credit goes to Andy at D&A machine in Canton GA. He could have pushed up the HP and torque much higher but worked with me to build what I wanted. Heres a 258 he built and dyno'd for another customer - 186 hp and 259 ft lbs:

    Yep, scored! Nice flat torque curve starting at low rpm. Perfect for a Jeep.

    Wish there was someone around here that had an engine dyno. A couple of chassis types near by but I'm afraid I'll bust something on those.

    If you do swap carbs look into a Weber DGV progressive 2bbl 32/36
