I have a dana 44 rear end that slips so much it is not driveable.
I thought it was the clutch but after pulling the tranny and finding only a stuck throw out gearing which i thought was the problem and replaceing the ring gear i reinstaled the tranny and found out i have the same problem.
I can start the engine and let the clutch out in gear , the drive shaft spins but the rear tires dont have enough power to move the jeep. it does drive in 4 high and low so it is the rear end.
I pulled the cover off and found no broken gears, everything turns o.k. but very little power to the wheels.
I have never taken a rear end apart , is this something a rookie should try?
    thank you for the help.

Sounds like you have a broken axle shaft. Put the Jeep in gear then jack up one rear wheel and try to turn it. Then try the other side with the opposite tire on the ground. If you can turn one of them under these conditions then the side that you can turn is broken.
