    putting a 225 back together- purchased as a box-o-parts.

couldnt find the fuel pump eccentric, nor the fuel pump. guessing that they were removed due to damage. either way, not really wanting to purchase these guys as the cost is too high for 'iffy' quality if I can just slap in an electric pump. but can I simply delete the eccentric or do I need to make a spacer? If so, is there any tech on here about that? anybody got one they can measure for thickness for me, I can make my own.

also, how 'bad' is 'too bad' for the rockers? these are also made of unobtainium and I cant find new ones any anywhere. not a whole set anyway.

    ideas/thoughts/opinions?

I've robbed the rocker shafts off Land Rover 3.9/4.0 V8s in the junk yard. I pull them apart, inspect, and remount the parts on new V6 shafts. These late model engines usually have little to no wear.
The early Rover alloy V8 engines also use the same fuel pump eccentric, but you need to find one with a mechanical fuel pump.

If it is the thickness of the eccentric then just temp mount the cam gear to align with the crank gear and measure the cam gap.

The Rover v8 engine was bought from Buick, it was originally the Buick 215 v8, a lot of the parts stayed the same over the years. The Buick 225 v6 was originally intended to be made of aluminum the same as the 215 v8, they were basically designed at the same and shared a lot of the same parts.

TA Performance use to sell rockers http://www.taperformance.com/......................If the steel wiping tips are all worn.........there probably history .......unless you can find someone that still has the machine fixture to re-grind them...........OD ID of the rocker shafts vs rockers.........get your measuring equipment out and measure.

The shafts need be smooth without any striations nor gouges.
At a minimum they need to pass the fingernail test.

The rocker arms should have very minimal free play on the shaft.
The rocker arm bores should be smooth with zero gouging.

I have a single used rocker shaft available,... that's in VGC.

I bought replacement rocker arm tips when I did my rebuild. Rockers where OK but tips where badly worn. They where sourced from TA PERF and seem to be from a V 8 as they where a bit larger and I had to drill the hole in rocker a little larger to accept them. Don't recall if I replaced shafts , I may have. mike

The alloy rocker arms generally don't wear much from the shaft, but the hardened tips do wear from the stems. The shafts nearly always have lots of wear on the underside. The rest usually can be cleaned up for reuse. I have had the tips cam-ground, but this was in the late 1970's. This is why I source the Rover parts from the U-Pull. I have gotten three sets from V8s that were in perfect condition with no wear. I even cut down one of the shafts for V6 length and got the plug back in the end, but drilling the cotter pin hole was nearly impossible due to the hardening and round shape.

You have to remember I built my first 215 Buick back around 1977 for my Tux. I have built probably 20 more of these engines since. I've got variations of these engines in a Triumph Tr8 and in a Marcos GT, as well as a LR Disco. These alloy V8s are perfect for small British sports cars. I built/installed 5 V8s in MGB conversions for other folks. They weigh in at about 318lbs with accessories, and make close to 200hp. I've gotten 269 hp on a 4.6l version.

The 215 V8's have the same bolt pattern on the bell housing as the 198 V6's.
Many people think the 225 is an offshoot from the 215's and indeed some parts interchange, the bore and stroke are common to the 300 cubic inch V8, 225=3/4 of 300.

When I had my engine rebuilt, I found a guy in California that sold rockers and push rods from another Buick engine. The push rod had a hole in the middle for a oil passage. Really have not run the engine much, but seams OK for now.

Did you get your question answered about the thickness of the eccentric? I have one in my spare parts that measures 0.775 inches. I may have a worn out one in my scrap bucket if you want just a spacer.

What did you end up doing with the rockers? I ended up buying a rebuilt set from TA Performance, very nice and IMHO well worth the $$. I still have lots of parts leftover (2 full sets)
