For those of us with M38A1s, what mid-size 24v winches have you found?
I have been looking for a 24v winch for a while now. So far, all I have found are smaller (2000-4000lb) ATV/trailer winches or HUGE winches (12,000lb+). Obviously those two options are of no use for my little M38A1. I'm looking for something in the 8-9500lb range.

I have considered a few solutions but haven't settled on one vs the other just yet. The main issue with running a 12v winch off one battery would be the growing battery imbalance and all the issues associated with it.

    Thoughts?

    Wrecker-truck equipment suppliers?
Military surplus - where 24V was standard across the board?

Me myself, I'd always prefer a PTO unit. GI type M38A1 winches are very pricey, but a civilian version could be fitted easy enough.

Just run you leads to one battery and buy a 12v winch.

Not healthy for dual batteries that share a single (series) charging circuit.

I ran 24v through a harbor freight winch a few times. It might have been faster than an 8274

Unfortunately, all military winches are on the larger size. The Warn HMMWV 24v winch is rated for 12,000lbs, for example (way way too large for my little M38A1). Most military winches on M38A1s were PTO winches which are unobtainable these days unless you have a substantially large bank account.
I prefer PTO winches (my M35A2 has a pto winch) and I have considered going the civilian PTO winch route. However, for the price of the shafts, the winch itself, (I already have the PTO) I'm at almost double or triple the price of an electric winch. There are also clocking issues with certain Koenig PTO units on the M38A1....I'm fairly sure I have the correct model for an M38A1 though.

This is an option I have considered quite heavily. If I was a betting man, I foresee this being the option I end up utilizing.
I have been watching my local craigslist and marketplace ads for a used 8274 to pop up (since new models are over $2000). Unfortunately, none have been listed. The closest one to me on craigslist is 10hrs away on the far side of Texas. It's just a waiting game in the mean time....

I was thinking more outside the box than specific vehicle winches. All kinds if equipment had them... bomb winches for aircraft, as an example.

Dunno about your locale, but I see civilian Jeep PTO set ups for around $500 complete.

Fire trucks, ambulances, freight truck and some aircraft etc ran dual 12v batteries in series but usually with 24V charging system.

Cost wise would it be feasible to hook up to the 24 volt system normally and go through a converter to get 12 volts?

    Very true.

My point is that it's poor practice to draw from one battery alone, when both are charged together as a unit in series. As they are in the M38A1.

If the batteries are at unequal resting voltage/charge, the regulator will see the average and persistently overcharge one while the other will remain undercharged. Not healthy for the batteries.

I never put much thought into what it would take to be able to set up for 12 volt usage on a 24 volt system. Certainly makes sense about the charging.

Here's a discussion using a step down converter to power a 12 volt winch on a 24 volt system. Might be an option.

It seems like you could wire up the winch to draw off both batteries in parallel while the rest of the Jeep uses them in series?

I had a cucv 1028. It had hybrid 12 / 24 volt system . most everything was 12 volt and only used 24 v to start . when I took starter motor to shop to get rebuilt they told me it used a 12 v starter motor with a 24 v solenoid . winches typically use 4 solenoids . 4 24 v solenoids on a 12 v winch might work . if you have a electric motor shop near you maybe they could steer you in the right direction

Well good news on the winch front. Over the weekend I was randomly looking around facebook marketplace and came across a complete pto winch setup for a GREAT price (better than anything I have seen in my area). I hooked up with the seller and we made the deal happen. I ended up with a koenig 100 winch, koenig 51 PTO, all the shafts, and the carrier bearing. He also threw in a ton of old jeep stuff (solex carbs, brake parts, etc).
