6D46B85F-6ECD-4386-8CE2-4FF95126BDB8.jpeg The other night driving home from the pool I got hit head on on the drivers side frame rail.

I was stopped and allowing someone to deliver or drop off someone. A car was coming towards me, passes that car, floors it and swerves into my lane impacting my jeep head on. The car was a dodge neon type thing and it dit with enough force to fly up about hood high and careen off us. His car has significant damage to the front end. It seemed to have torn out most of the intake and damaged his radiator. The side of his car was damaged enough that the drunk old guy could not open his door.

Neither my son nor I were injured, just rattle and angry.

Im not going to get into the neighborhood we were in, but it was not savory. The cops showed up and basically saved us from "issues". I drove home.

Anyway, the frame is now impact rated. I cant find any damage at all. Im sure something is bent somewhere, but upon cursory inspection none that matters. I ordered 2 new front springs and shocks that have arrived today.

Jeep will be back on the road tomorrow maybe.

If you still had the original 2A frame it would be pretzel shaped after that.

The original frame I had from the pile of parts for the 2a was rusted out, the 3B frame I used from the same pile was twisted so maybe that 3B one was tested to failure?

Springs go in today if I get my bushings. The shocks will be mounted a bit differently and maybe a steering stabilizer added.

kinda sunk in and was thinking last night about how a car running head on into you in a jeep is just not a good thing....

This is my second on road crash in a jeep. 77cj5 304. The first was at night as well, driving down a straight road going the speed limit at about 45, suddenly I'm sideways sliding on ice, turn into the slide and hit a telephone pole right in front of the rear axle passenger side.

I was ejected, hit my head on the roll bar on the way out, came to sliding feet first on my back in gasoline toward my jeep. The gas tank was torn out as was the rear axle. I was covered in gasoline.

I rebuilt that good enough to drive and sell. It was all bent up.

Chris, I just read the whole darn thing while I'm on jeep-hiatus vacation in Hawaii. What a great job you have done. I will never complain about my lack of space or working conditions again. I'm glad no one got hurt (including the jeep) in the accident. The best thing about the accident was getting your build back to the top where I noticed it. For some reason, I wasn't very active on here before I started my tux build in Dec. 2020, so I had never seen it. This really got my wheels turning for my next task- a frame for my 3B. And since I have had so much slack time here on r+r, I find myself building it in my head. I am thinking I have a few options, go your route and start from scratch (although steel prices are scary), maybe a Throttle Down Kustoms frame (https://throttledownkustoms.com/i-26373462-cj3b-jeep-frame.html?ref=category:1402117;brand:102618), maybe just their side rails, or maybe buy a stretch frame from a buddy that lost interest in his project. I would love to have some wheelbase, cargo room, fuel capacity, leg room. But the cutting of a tub in 2, or 3, is a little daunting. Now that we almost have the tux done, I might lay up the 3B for a season and tackle it. Anyway, great job, and you will have to get that thing out to the Rubicon one of these days, and I can show you some granite steps to climb that aren't all the same.

Thanks for reading this. I have other threads, like making my own Full Float D44, Disk brakes, Messy 225 engine rebuilds, SM420 rebuilds, D18 rebuild and D30 junk.. I drive my jeep all the time and every one of these things have made it so that I DRIVE it and don't let it sit. The latest 4.3 transplant is amazing. I need my jeep to basically drive like a YJ but with all the coolness of the 2A. Power disk brakes, power steering.. Stuff like that. One great thing is a rear mount tank to be able to sink the seat into the body a bit, so I'm not looking OVER the top of the windshield, plus an extra 5 gallons.

To do this again, I would just use a good title and buy a MD Juan body kit for a MB or GPW and cut it in half. I would then buy the patch panels and weld it all in. Its really not that big of a deal and if its NEW, well who cares if you wreck it...

I have been driving this thing for years now and modernizing it has made me WANT to drive it all the time. I made my own 1 ton tie rod and drag links, rebuilt my D18 with everything new and installed an ATV overdrive with the 4.3. The PS pump for the 4.3 is designed to run hydro boost too, so it make the steering even less effort than before. 4.3 also has more vacuum, so the brakes work better too!

I want to get this jeep out west at some point in time for sure. I thought this year was the year, but work, another dirt bike trip through Montana, Idaho and Colorado with my sons before my oldest goes to college at University of Hawaii this fall is making that unlikely...

Anyway, think that drunk guy did me a favor... The new springs and new shock mounts to relocate the lower connection have made my jeep handle, ride and drive better than before..

    Thanks!!
