I was organizing the T18 parts yesterday and i noticed a chip in one tooth.

It is only on one tooth, every one else is in great shape, seems like maybe it was dropped or something. Do you think it is Fine to run with?? Should i maybe file down the sharp edges, or will it just wear down while driving. It looks like it maybe it is the 1st gear. But please advise if it is good enough to run or should i repalce. like i said it is only on one tooth, everyone else is in great shape.

    Thanks!!!

I'd probbably emry cloth it and see what happens. Looks like it was dropped.
That'll be the weak spot in the trans if you decide to run it. If you plan on using it you may run into some noise, but not anything unusual in a Jeep. ;)

Oh-oh! Dan's Ding!! Dan: Since it's just at the biginning of the wear pattern of the gear, I think I would just take a 6", very fine, Mill Bastard file and smothe out the sharp edges. Don't do much, just take the "edge" off of it.

Since I'm NO gear expert, is who you should ask is Nickmill. Nick knows EVERYTHING! R)

Thanks guys!!! I will most likely run it with the chip, and will take teh edges down, since it looks like a low gear i will probably be just fine with it. i am just glad it was only one chip ;)

Now to fix my ding ;)

I got my rebuild kit from Novak. The kit was $160, a littel more than you can probably get in some places but their service is superb. I also got myy input shaft and mainshaft from them and had them do machine work. Defiantely recomend them.

    just my opinion

well dude i work on gearboxes all day long my opinion is to replace it cause down the road it could do more damage. if ya got the dough do it otherwise better start savin for all the gears cause metal on metal not good also those r hardend so it could actually lock up on ya if ya lose another chip.

ohh it's crazzy fun when things lock up. my d18 did that last summer and lost a good number of teeth before i could get it home... imagine driving home braced for that to happen the whole time cause you knew there was something floating around in there. those were the days. if i could do anything to avoid something like that again i would. i'm sure you remember it (minus the locking up part) because you gave me the gears i got now...

Dan, your new input shaft is going to be running on that chipped tooth of the cluster gear; my opinion is replace the cluster gear
cheaper to do it now than when it takes out your new input gear and who knows what else

I agree with replacing it. As noted one more small chip could wreak havoc with the tranny, plus that one gear would actually "drive" every gear except fourth.

    Ouch!!!! $200 for the cluster.

I agree Glenn, if it was only 1st gear or reverse i could easily live with it. but i totally didnt realize it was the 4 gear.

It's everything but fourth, but would be driven by the input shaft 100% of the time.

    Dan.
You might try a truck parts supply. I bought parts for my T18 at Bayshore Trucks here on the west coast. When I say truck parts supply, I mean like 18 wheelers. I had to replace my gearset also. It was a few years ago and i remember it wasn't cheap. But a lot less aggravating than having to tear the whole thing back down later just to put twice as much money into it. Take a deep breath, resign yourself to doing it and "git 'er done"
