Today I removed my old rusty steel tank and of course took my seats out as well. One of the original seat bracket bolts was broken. I broke the other rear bolt during removal. I broke the rear tank strap bolt, and I had to turn the philips head into a flathead with my grinder to get another seat bolt out (woohoo! and don't worry, I got every thing pulled and replace with new hard ware, thank you visegrips).

I was curious about how original this jeep is as well as being curious about seating options. If you look at the pictures, you'll notice the driver's side has 4 holes on the outside rear. One was for the tank strap, and one was for the rear of the seat bracket. The other two (with philips heads) were unused. The center or inside rear mount had an unused philips as well as the broken one that was supposed to be holding the seat bracket down. The front center only had one hole, and the front outside had several holes, but only one would work with the seat frame as far as positioning goes.

What are all the extra holes for? Was there a bench seat option that used different holes or something?

I went with Bestop Trailmax II low backs. I would have loved to find a set of originals! The other holes are for different mounting options. The Bestop seats were a direct swap (for me at least)

Personally I really like my Smittybilt low backs. The butt cushions are thick, so the mounts need to be adapted as low as possible. But they look very much like the originals, and are not expensive.

I had my stock seats rebuilt/recovered in marine vinyl. $$$$
But they look awesome IMO and i still have a folding passenger seat for rear seat and toolbox access.

Well, for $80 for the pair, at a pick-and-pull, I had to try them--Bestop high backs. I pulled the upholstery up on the back of the driver's seat and cut the Bestop inner seat frame and welded a mod to give extra leg room. Also have the driver's seat tilted back , which works for my "old-timer's posture". Only trouble other than looks is you can't sneak under things, such as up-rooted near blown over timber.

Over the years, there were various seat style (coil springs up thtough'65, then foam cushions from '66-up). The older models used one those 4 positions on the door opening to mount the under bar depending on leg room needed. Later seats like yours had a fixed under bar with a slide adjuster under the seat. Different under bars and brackets used different mounting locations over the production run. I guess the philips screws just "filled' unused holes.

I had the highbacks for a while but got tired of them because they blocked visibility too much.

JMO - the factory bucket seats (ca 1965 on) are very comfortable. And they work with the factory brackets very well.

Pretty sure the seat core is the same for the '72-75 seats and the earlier foam seats. That said, these covers should fit all the bucket seats. The vinyl pattern is wrong for the earlier seats, but I think the core is the same. JEEP 1972-1975 CJ LOW BACK BUCKET SEATS UPHOLSTERY KIT | eBay

Tim, I used that kit for both of my Jeeps and have been very happy with it. The same seller also has a kit with horizontal pleats, which is what I went with. The pleats are a little narrower than original, but they still look good.

Does the seat tilt forward far enough to open the tool box?

    To all,
Here are my seats which I recovered myself under adult supervision (wife). I left the old seat covers on and bought some foam from a craft store, and went to it. The seat upholstery kit came with hog rings and hog ring pliers.

The seat covers were purchased off of ebay from auto interior kits located in California. The cost was less than $450 including shipping for all the covers.

I think you may regret not having the fold and tumble passenger seat that came stock.None of the aftermarket offer that feature.I just rebuilt and had new covers done for all three OEM seats.Very happy with the out come.BTW the rear seat springs are the same as front seats if you need springs . I had rear seat that I didn't need so I borrowed the like new springs (11 ) from it and still have the Levi script buttons to sell. The front seats use 4 springs each.

    Mike,

If you are in reference to my seats, the passenger seat is fold and tumble.

Sorry ! No I was directing my remark to the OP or anyone else that is considering replacing O.E.M. seats with non folding. Everyones situation is different but I really missed being able to access the tool box or let a passenger in to rear seat. Cheers, mike

The previous owner of mine installed bestop seats, I did not like them at all. There was a bar low on the back that was very uncomfortable, not nearly enough padding, and the passenger seat did not fold and tumble which is a very good option. I purchased a set of used OEM seats with upholstery in rough shape but good cushions, and could not be happier with the comfort. I plan to redo the upholstery in marine polyurethane vinyl.
