    Hey all,

Does anyone have any pictures of the e-brake setup in these rigs? Mine is missing the cable and handle/whatever it is supposed to run to...

    Thanks

I can get a picture for you this evening. In the meantime, it is a straight-pull "T" or "L" handle under the far left side of the dash, cable operates the drum brake mounted to the back of the transfer case where the rear driveshaft attaches.

Looking at your picture of the parking brake, it looks like your brake cable goes through the bracket on the cross member, my cross member has that bracket which has a rounded end with a slot machined into it, but no way for the cable to fasten it to the bracket ( A ball crimped onto the cable sheath?)

The bracket you are looking at may be for the engine cable stay (that may be missing). The parking brake sheath is usually clamped to the crossmember.

Thanks for that! I'll check that tomorrow as my cable seems way to loose for it to be connected to the cross member.
    Thanks,Vince

Well, I lied, couldn't wait till tomorrow so I checked a couple of minutes ago, and bingo! the parking brake cable is clamped to the cross member as it should be. Even has the proper clamp!
There is no engine stay cable though, seems like a parking brake clip is where the stay cable should attach to the bell housing?

Did you find a source for the handle? My '70 cj5 is missing the parking brake handle and cable, too.

Thanks for the copious photos--shows the entire E brake system to the terminal end. Bravo!

The next question is really dumb: what is the way it supposed to work? The way it is engaged and disengaged.

I've got a blank T handle; kinda sad it doesn't say BRAKE on it. o_O

My 68 has a smooth T handle, the 69 says Brake...that's my limited year model reference window (assuming they are original...and seem to be).

How they work: Pull straight out on the handle to engage, you'll hear a ratcheting sound as the handle shaft has notches on one side and a prawl that engages the notches. To disengage, turn the handle 1/4 turn (which will move the prawl to a smooth part of the handle shaft) and it will slide back in.

Its nice to have a reference as to when Kaiser change handle style. The Commando also used the later ribbed "brake" handle, only with an extension on the dash bracket.

Mine's a '68 too, so there's two examples now to your reference window, Tim E.

It doesn't ratchet though, and I had no idea that you 1/4 turn it and then push it back in. HOW ODD.
Wouldn't it make more sense for it to remain pulled out as a visual reference that the E Brake/Parking Brake is engaged?

I'm just a young whipper snapper though, with limited experience in cars older than I am...

I want it to ratchet though. I like tactile indicators.

They actually do remain pulled-out while the e-brake is engaged. To take the e-brake off (disengage)...that's when you 1/4 turn it and it goes back in...releasing the e-brake.
