HA - it was a bit chilly today. And windy. First day wearing shorts and a T-shirt. Still cold hours later.

Cloudy, figured it'd rain on me, but it parted around us apparently. May be it was the fumes off of the primer.

Sierra's to our east were getting hammered - either snow or rain or both, not sure.

Ever figure out what the deal was with the headers?

Packaging mistake. Novak sent me the correct header, dropped via Sanderson, i sent the old one back to Sanderson.

Installed it, a thing of beauty.

Other small projects jumped in front of the jeep lately.

    Still whittling away on it.

Lovely! Any thread with details on how that was accomplished?

Re: Headers. Great that they stepped up and took care of it. Quality company.

Saginaw swap out of mockup. Committed now.

AND POOF. Ran out of wire for the MIG. Sheesh.

Anyway, here's a few sneaky peeks of 'where', of the cuts to the cross member, my 'welding' and where things might be headed

Got my plate positioned, the frame has (4) 3/16” gussets under the 3/8” plate i am using.

I have to run to hardware store. My hole saw is 1/8” too big after it eats the kerf.

My little mig and my capabilities to make clean beads challenged, and figured out right wire speed (i think) as i had to build the welds up to ensure i had good penetration (worked it like a V. Idk yet, i may go back, grind and redo some of it.

when the heat and wire are right it sounds like a frying egg. those welds look a little cold.

Don't forget your travel speed. Looks like your travel speed is a little inconsistent. I like to brace my stinger hand at the wrist or forearm to steady my hand and help smooth my travel. I also catch myself counting out a rhythm in my head or tapping my toe inside of my boot to help keep my pace consistent.

Your welds do look cold. If you are nearing the capacity of your "little mig" to weld the thicker material get a torch and preheat the parts before striking an arc. Getting the parts up to 200* - 300* F will help considerably. Also, "building up the welds" does not mean or ensure good penetration. It could very well mean a lot more grinding.

    Thanks for the hints!

Fought a breeze (... and the breze won ...) with borderline power on the mig machine and the shielding gas cranked up... This afternoon the breeze stopped, and i got some better melty.

I too try and brace my hand, i am shakey enough otherwise.

Had to fill in two holes i cut thru 3/8 plate, good thing i saved the plugs i cut out. Not so sure how they got so freaking far off. Resolved it, redrilled. Nothing funner than breaking bits in a hardened weld. Torch is coming out tomorrow for pre-heating.

Will be re-grinding, and re-welding tomorrow, all new drill bits, i broke 3, and i havent broken one in a while ... and a new hole saw (it didnt like something i did while going slow, possibly cutting thru the welds, and it is a bit toothless).

IDK if i have the angle on the wire correct - i have been ‘pushing’ into the weld (generally angled forward into the travel direction).

Some days you get the cream, some the curd, today i had some sour curds.

    Thanks again afor the insights.

After breaking more bits and wiping out three hole saws from OSH my level of frustration almost took me to using the cutting torch.

Went to home depot to see what hole saws they have..

Hmmm, Milwaukee. That might work. Fine print says lifetime warranty.

So i bought 3 just in case.

Managed to finish cutting all three holes thru the 3/8 plate and the frame.

With one hole saw. No broken teeth.

Then i found this this eve.

    Holesaw Arbors & Pilot Drills

Made in USA?!?!? Awesome. Same price as the chinese junk i got at OSH.

Should have went there first, but it was across town...

Wow, all the way across town. Not making that trip must have saved you a bunch. Dam, it's nice to know I'm not the only one that falls into that trap.

Today, after about 3 days of grinding, drilling, welding, more grinding, more welding, and more grinding... the hole saw fiasco and fabrication frustration level 5 (on a 10pt scale)...

I managed to cobble and goober this together.

I did cut the bottom half of the pipe off. I think this will suit my needs without it.

I am not a fan of welding around small diameter pipes from underneath... meh... hot, melty things burned thru my clothes.

OK, I could practice that, which would be good to do, or if I were smarter, I'd have laid it out on a bench and worked it from that direction...

I may come back and revisit a couple things on the welds (grind and re-do), but now I need to figure out a drag link and may be a support arm from the other frame horn.

Been mucking with power steering brackets. They were about a hole width off.

Just modified to get what i needed.

Downstream, i may have to massage the inner fender to help it fit.

Now i need to make 2 more spacers, one to fit here between the mounts. And one to fit between the adjuster part of the mount.

This looks slightly off, but it is photo paralax, i think it looks good enough.

Now to make those squares look pretty with a nice radius around them.

Sorry I missed your initial posts earlier this month with the steering box install. Nothing but encouragement from me...one day I will have to face the reality of a wasted Ross box and will be doing exactly what you are...and will probably have the exact same issues you did with welding it all up: small MIG, cold welds without enough voltage, inconsistent travel speed and shaky hands. Its frustrating to have to do stuff over and over again trying to learn on the job, but its better to take the time to do over and eventually get it right. Soldier on...

I am not fully happy with the angle of the ham can.

I may move it a little on a ‘pivot angle’. Looks like the fan belt will be a limiter at the water pump. Gonna wait a little and look and ponder it first.

Looks like w/o modification, the fuel pump shield will need some mod, or i just drop it as the exhaust is now on the otherside of the cross member now.

wildwood master cylinder adapted to the original master cylinder mount (drill two holes). I should have made a cardboard template to get it done, would have been easier.

<edit> I will retake these later in better light.
Still looking for my clutch pedal that comes up thru the floor.

Nothing's set perm yet except the master, and that's relative (weld holes shut and redo if needed).

Curious, are you going to use a single belt for your P/S pump, fan, water pump etc.? I can't tell fromn the pic. I set mine up with two different belts which made it fairly easy.

Two belts! There's a double pulley on the crank from the old smog-pump... the power steering pulley lines right up with that.

I just don't like where it's currently sitting in relation to the outer edge of the head / over the frame. Have an idea that's a grinder-away from putting it back to where it is currently.

going to try it later today.
