    Thanks again
the 360 is tempting and the wide rat 4 spd would be great to have.
definitely not a bolt in, but sounds doable

Bought it yesterday for $50 bucks. Nothing appears broken inside.

I just found out that the 304 in my 73 aint a 304 at all. Its a 360!!(y) I have been thinking of a sbc instead of rebuilding the 304, and it could still happen but not as likely now.

That sounds like an old '72 CJ5 I bought up at Hatteras many years ago. The Jeep had a V8 and had been rolled out on the beach, and the windshield frame was bent over, but it ran like a scalded dog. A few weeks later, I discovered it was actually a 390! I wish I still had that engine today.
The AMC engines cost a bit more than sbc's to build, but a 360 with a mild cam and aluminum intake/4 bbl makes real nice power. All things equal, I think they make more power/torque than a Chevy 350.

If someone were looking for a replacement for a 304, the 360 is a lot more plentiful. And dropping in a 360 is likely the most bang for the buck, performance-wise. The 304 and 360 use the same crank, but they are balanced a little differently and each have their own flywheel. The best thing about the 360, aside from the displacement difference, is the heads. The 304 heads have smaller valves than the 360/401 heads, to work with the smaller bore.
