Can I replace my AMC 360 with another engine that will fit in exactly where the AMC 360 came out (i.e same motor mount location and transmission bolt pattern) ?? Would a Dodge 360 or 318 match :?

any of the AMC v-8's... not sure about the 6's but that would be the second easiest swap, then I would say a chevy v-8 but who would want one of those in a jeep? (INSERT BUBBA BASH HERE!)

AMC engines I6 and V8 are interchangeable.

Other engines, Chevy, Ford, etc. bolt in with some mods.

Oh, a Ford 5.0 will bolt in with two right hand side engine mounts IIRC.

Just need to get the correct adaptor for the trans.

I'm sure if this is remotely correct or incorrect someone will back me up or correct me. ;)

AMC I6 an V8 have the same bellhousing pattern, 1971 and later. Different frame mounts or frame mount placements between the I6s and V8s though.

The V8 engines in the same family (AMC 304, 360, 401) are the only ones that fit your definition of exactly fitting. If you want a different V8, the Chevys (265-400) are probably the next easiest, but require an adapter and different frame mounts. The Mopar V8s are possible swaps in place of a 360, but in no way are they an exact replacement. See www.novak-adapt.com under "Engines" in the "Knowledge Gateway."

What about the 290, 343 and 390 AMC motors, these were all before the 304, 360 , 401 but they do share the same block and bolt pattern and probably the same motor mounts.
