So I was first testing my winch when i got it and it would run.

Well I a not sure if i burned it up for some reason after that initial test. No magic smoke came out so that was good. I made sure the grounds were good to the winch. I rigged a switch to operate a solenoid to power the winch. All readings showed i was getting 12v to the winch terminal. solonoid worked fine. Battery was charged good.

My question is, I noticed that I am missing the brake on the motor shaft. It is covered by the end cap. When i opened it, there was just a sleeve with a cotter pin through it.
That being said, would not having a brake on the back make the motor not work? Or would it damage the motor? I am unsure if its direct purpose for the motor. Just to stop the shaft from over spinning when the engine stops getting voltage?

The brake on the end of the shaft is to prevent an over speed of the motor during a free spool situation. If it is missing, it will not prevent the motor from running. I have a schematic of the winch if you need to see what the brake looks like.

Edit: Here is a schematic that's on line.
